Set up email on the W710i
Matthew Haigh
The W710i is capable of sending and receiving email, as long as you have an email provider that gives you POP3 or IMAP access to your mail
To set up email, go to the Messages menu (Figure 1), Email (Figure 2), Settings, then choose New Account (Figure 3).
You’ll be prompted for a name for this account, then a long set of configuration options need to be filled in.
- Account name is what you’d like to call this email account (Figure 4)
- Email alert is the sound that the phone will make when an email is received.
- Connect Using is the data account you want to use to connect to the net; if you haven’t already defined one this is set up as shown in the setup GPRS for browsing page (Figure 5).
- Email Address is your email address (Figure 6)
The following settings are all dependent upon your Internet Service Provider. If you don’t know them, ask your ISP for help.
- Connection Type is POP3 or IMAP4 – if you don’t know which to use, ask your internet service provide (ISP) (Figure 7).
- Incoming server is your ISP’s POP3 or IMAP4 mail server name (Figure 8).
- Username is the username that you log in to your mailserver with.
- Password is your incoming email password
- Outgoing server is the server you send emails to. It is very likely that you’ll have to use your mobile network’s outgoing mail server, as for security reasons most Internet Service Providers won’t let you use their outgoing server unless you are connected to their network (Figure 9)
The advanced options give you more control over your email
- Your name is your name as you’d like it to appear in the From line of your emails (Figure 10)
- Signature allows you to automatically add some text to the bottom of every email
- Download S&R lets you limit the size of emails downloaded during standard Send and Receive operations, which can save a lot of data transfer costs (Figure 11)
- Check Interval is how often you’d like the email client to automatically check your email (Figure 12)
- Push email is dependent upon your server; if supported it will keep a connection open and you will be immediately notified if mail arrives.
- Allow Connection lets you limit email collection to being on your home network; this prevents you accidentally running up huge roaming data bills if you take the phone abroad.
- Copy Outgoing automatically sends a copy of any outgoing mails to an address that you choose – letting you keep a record on your desktop email client of sent messages (Figure 13).
- Encryption allows you to use a secure (SSL) connection to your ISP, if your ISP supports this (Figure 14).
- Outgoing username and password are not needed if you are using your mobile network’s outgoing servers. If you want to use your ADSL ISP’s mail servers you will need to check if they support SMTP authentication, and fill in the details that they give you (Figure 15).
