The Sony Ericsson K660i's email application allows you to send, receive and compose emails from your handset.

After the introduction of mobile email by BlackBerry, virtually every other mobile phone manufacturer has brought in their own POP3 functionality.

Actually POP3 differs slightly from Push email services found in many smartphones, because it allows you to choose when to log on and receive your email instead of having an always-on connection. That means you can keep data costs to minimum as well.

POP3 technology lets users retrieve emails remotely from systems not directly connected to their device or network.

You’ll need to refer to your email provider to see whether it offers POP3 functionality, but currently a lot of web-based email providers offer the service, although in some cases it is only part of the premium service and not available to standard users.

Currently Gmail is one of the free email providers to offer POP3 functionality for free, while Hotmail users will have to upgrade to a premium subscription. Yahoo Mail users can, at the time of writing, still activate POP3 as part of the free service, although that may be subject to change.

If you’re using a web-hosting package with mail forwarding, you’re almost certain to have POP3 email. If you’re using an office email system and want remote access to your mail, you’ll need to contact your IT department and ask if the system is configured for POP3.

You will need some information from your email provider in order to begin the set up process. You’ll also need to make sure that POP3 is available and activated – you can usually find this in your email settings. Check your provider’s settings and/or help pages and find out the following:

Email address - this is your email address.

Username – This is usually the part before the ‘@’ in your email address, although it does vary between providers, check the settings page of your email account or ask your provider if you’re unsure.

Password - your usual email password

Incoming (POP3) server - If it's not in the table below, your email provider will be able to supply this and you'll usually find their details on their website

Outgoing (SMTP) server - This will depend on which mobile phone network you use. See the table below for details.

Note: your email provider's POP3 settings will also contain details of the Outgoing (SMTP) server. You don’t need this to receive email on and can be added later on.

  1. First press the centre button or menu softkey option to enter the main menu. Highlight the Messaging icon and press Select (Figure 1)
  2. Scroll down and select Email (Figure 2). Press Select.
  3. Scroll all the way down to Accounts and press Select again (Figure 3)
  4. Highlight New account and press Add (Figure 4)
  5. In the 'Your name' panel, type in your name (in this case we've used 'Know Your Mobile' (Figure 5).
  6. Use the central navigation key to click down a line to the 'Email address' panel. Type in the full email address you want to access. Press Cont. (Figure 6).
  7. In the 'Username' panel, type in your username - usually the bit of your email address before the '@'. Check and edit it appropriately if your full email address is shown in this box (Figure 7).
  8. Click down to the 'Password' panel. Enter your password carefully - it will be shown as a row of asterisks once you've selected a character (Figure 8). Press Cont.
  9. A pop-up message will appear onscreen to ask if you'd like to connect to the internet to check for email settings. Press Yes (Figure 9). This will take several seconds while the phone connects and interrogates the remote settings database.
  10. A message will appear when settings have been found 'Email setup completed. Update inbox?'. Press Yes (Figure 10).
  11. The phone will now connect to the remote email server to download any emails waiting in that account. It will show how many messages have been received. Press OK to see your inbox (Figure 11).

If there are any downloaded messages in your email inbox, you can see them listed (Figure 12). To view them in full, scroll down the list of message headers in your inbox, and press View to get the full email onscreen (Figure 13).

If there is an attachment or message bigger than the automatic size limit, you can download it to view. Press Options, highlight Download, and press Select (Figure 14).

Accessing your email account to send and receive emails
You should now be set up and ready to send and receive emails on your phone.

To test it out you can access the W890i's email application as you did originally (above): access the main menu, press the Messaging option (Figure 1), scroll down to Email and press Select (Figure 2).

Here you can see a familiar set of email options. You can click on Write new to compose and send a message, or Inbox to look at received emails.

To get new emails, in the Inbox press Send&rec, or press Options, highlight Send & Receive and press Select (Figure 15).The phone will connect with your remote email server and download new emails.

Getting automatic email updates and push email
You can set the W890i to receive email at regular intervals - from every 5 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 2 hours, 4 hours, 12 hours or every 24 hours.

To set this, go into the Email application.

Scroll down to highlight Settings. Press Select (Figure 16)

Scroll down to Check interval. Press Select (Figure 17).

Scroll down to highlight the interval you want for checking email. Press Select (Figure 18). This will now be set.

If your network supports it, you may also be able to set up push email, so you can receive messages automatically as they're received. The push email option is in the same menu list as the the Check interval settings (Figure 17).
