Freshening the look and feel of the Sony Ericsson C702 can be done quickly and easily simply by changing its theme.

Within the C702's menu system, you can select from a small list of pre-loaded themes, or you can search for and download numerous others that can give your phone the individual look you may be after.

The themes feature in the Sony Ericsson C702 allows you to change in one go, the wallpaper image, colour scheme and screensaver used on the phone. It takes just a few simple button presses to transform the phone. There are loads of online sites offering themes that you can download to your PC and then simply transfer across to your phone - and as well as paid for themes, there are enormous numbers that are available free of charge.

In addition, you should be able to find themes to download from your mobile network operator's portal, or from Sony Ericsson's Fun and Downoads mobile service.

So whether you want to show support for your favourite football team, update your phone to show off the latest Hollywood blockbuster, get your favourite band or babe onscreen, or simply add something quirky or meaningful to you, you're likely find what you're after.

Downloading free Sony Ericsson themes
As well as the pre-loaded themes available on your Sony Ericsson C702, you can also browse and download more directly to your phone straight from Sony Ericsson (check for data charges though - these may apply if you don't have a data package included in your airtime deal). Here's the easy way...

  • From the standby page select Menu (Figure 1)
  • From the main Menu screen select Settings (Figure 2).
  • Scroll across to Display.
  • Scroll down to Theme (Figure 3) and press Select.
  • Scroll up to the Sony Ericsson option (with a globe icon next to it). Press Go to (Figure 4).
  • The phone will now connect to Sony Ericsson's Fun & Downloads mobile internet portal. You are presented with a list of themes, with small thumbnail images of them (Figure 5).
  • You can scroll down here and choose any of these, but as you can see by the price next to them, these will be charged to your phone account.
  • To get to the free theme downloads section, scroll down to the bottom of the page, where the last option in the Categories section is Free Stuff (Figure 6). Move the cursor to point at this option and press Select.
  • You can now browse down through the available free download content (Figure 7). You can click on Details to see a slightly larger thumbnail of the selected theme.
  • When you see an item you want to download, move the cursor to point at the Download option next to it (Figure 8). Click Select.
  • You will be presented with basic details of the file you want to download (including file size) and asked Continue? (Figure 9). Press Yes.
  • The theme will now be downloaded to the phone. A message appears telling you that the new theme has been saved (Figure 10). It asks Use now? Press Yes if you want to install it straight away. If you simply want to save it for use later, press No and you will be returned to the free download section of the Fun & Downloads portal. You can see how to install saved themes here.
  • If you pressed Yes to install the new theme, you will be presented with a Set option (Figure 11). Press Select.
  • The new theme is applied and the background has changed (Figure 12). Press Back to go back to the free downloads page (Figure 7).

When you have finished choosing and downloading themes, you can exit by pressing the call End button on the phone's control panel. This returns to you the Themes page (Figure 13).

To get back to your newly-themed standby page, press the call End key again (Figure 14).
