Sony launched its Xperia Tablet Z in Japan a few months back, but MWC 2013 was the first time we’d seen the slate in an official capacity inside Europe.

It’s now confirmed for a UK launch, although Sony did not confirm a release date, and it's one of the best Android-powered tablet offerings we’ve seen in quite some time.

Featuring a 10.1-inch 1920x1200 pixel resolution, Android Jelly Bean, and a gorgeous design that’s just 6mm thick, the Xperia Tablet Z has all the makings of one of the tablet devices of 2013. The price at £399 for the Wi-Fi-only version isn’t bad either.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z confirmed specs:

Dimensions: 172 x 266 x 6.9 mm

Camera:

  • 8.1-megapixels
  • 16x Digital zoom
  • Front-facing camera (2.2-megapixels 1080p)

Display: 10.1 inches 1920x1200 pixels resolution

OS: Android Jelly Bean version 4.1

Internals: Quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm + Adreno 320 GPU

Durability: IPX5/7 (Water-resistant) & IP5X (Dust-proof)

And below, you can see just how waterproof the Xperia Tablet Z actually is in our dunk test live from MWC 2013.

‘The Xperia Tab is intended to restore Sony’s core values in the minds of consumers rather than change the tablet market status quo. The company only has modest expectations for sales of the device, which is very much aimed at the premium end of the tablet spectrum,’ said Ovum analyst Tony Cripps.

He added: ‘It is certainly not cheap and has Apple’s iPad as its primary competition after all. However, in terms of design, build quality, features (including excellent sound and display), usability, and exclusivity, the Xperia Tab may prove to be a key product in Sony’s rebirth.’

Sony has yet to confirm when it will be releasing the Xperia Tablet Z in the UK.
