Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to include HDMI support?

The Android-powered ‘Playstation Phone’ lacks an HDMI output, but is that about to change?

An image of the Xperia Play connected to an HDMI adapter and playing in bold colour, on a large HDTV, may well point to a new feature.

Currently, the Xperia Play handset does not come equipped with an HDMI slot, as Sony would have you believe based on its prototype photos. Even when taken apart, the Xperia shows no obvious contacts or available placements.

However, on the above picture, you can see that the HDMI cord is protruding out of the left side of the Xperia device, whereas on the retail version, as engadget correctly points out, ‘there’s nothing there but shiny chrome.’

The screen on the sleek handset, which provides a decent playing platform but isn't the best mobile, tends to be small, and better for more casual gaming. A good solution would be to add an HDMI port, enabling players to mirror the screen display on any HD television.

On the Xperia it would have made perfect sense to have an HDMI port and we can’t imagine why Sony would leave such an important asset off the device.

Sony’s Xperia Arc does have the HDMI outlet, so maybe in time future versions of the Xperia Play will include the connectivity.
