MemoMe review

We review MemoMe, a high-speed voice memo sending tool

Published on Nov 9, 2009

Any Windows Mobile device allows you to make a voice memo for yourself – important dates, names, reminders, that terrific business idea that will disappear back into the ether unless you make a note of it right now – it's all covered.

The trouble with these sort of notes is that you tend to have to remember to look at them. MemoMe goes one step further, by offering an automatic way to pass these quick voice notes to yourself (or your secretary, or whoever) by email.

It loads fairly quickly – about five seconds after you've clicked on it – but with an app like this, time is of the essence, and it could be greatly improved if they could cut that launch time in half.

The menu is neatly laid out in full screen with four large, thumb-friendly buttons spelling out what MemoMe does. The icons are clear enough that they don't really need labelling – there's an arrow for playback, a talking head for record, an envelope for send and an off button. It couldn't be much simpler really.

Press the record button and recording starts in less than a second, which is great, and runs for the length of time you've established in your settings. You can set a maximum recording time of between 30 and 360 seconds – it's very much for quick thoughts – and you can choose whether or not to keep a copy on your device (careful though, they're all WAV files rather than compressed MP3).

When your time's up, or when you press again to finish the message, there's a booming gong sound to let you know (or as booming as your handset's speakers will allow). Once you've done your bit, it closes itself automatically, which is handy.

For even greater speed, if you set it to 'Auto Pilot' MemoMe will start recording as soon as you open it, and email your message as soon as you finish.

Our main gripe was that it only offers the option to send to a single email address. In most cases this would be fine, since you'd generally be sending it to yourself, but sometimes you might want to pass that thought on to someone else, and to do that, you'll need to go into the configuration settings menu and manually enter an alternative email address over your own.

A drop-down menu allowing you to enter several different addresses, with the option to send to one or multiples, would have been a great asset for this app.

It's a straightforward app and we found it worked seamlessly – a very useful way to return those important thoughts to the front of your mind as soon as you check your email.
