PowerMP3 review

We review PowerMP3, a music player and management application for Symbian S60 devices

Published on Sep 23, 2009

We all know that phones are no longer just phones, with the ability to turn them into SatNavs, games consoles, even recipe books thaks to the number of applications available to download.

But one of the most popular moves the mobile industry made was incorporating a music player.

As we've all got more used to the idea, we are demanding more from our music devices and the tinny noise from the back of the bus is just not good enough anymore.

Here enters the PowerMP3 app, designed to increase the capabilities of your phone and turn it into a top music player.

The initial opening of the app could offend the eye with the more than gaudy background however there are a range of bright designs to choose from.

The look is not what matters here though, it is the quality of sound. The app offers 17 different sound settings depending on the music you play from Classical to Reggae, and there truly is a difference between sounds turning your phone into a bonefide music stereo.

Another clever thing is the automatic importing of your MP3s that you have already downloaded onto your phone. There is a button that links straight from the interface to your library, methodically sorting it into album, playlist, song etc.

Unfortunately this is where the simplicity ends. The app is messy with too many menus and too busy a screen. It took us a long time to get to grips with where everything we needed to access was, making us long for a simple CD player so we could just listen to the song we wanted.

Yes the options are shiny. You can make playlists, add album images and even put a sleep timer on but too be honest we were asleep before we even reached these elements.

The app is free so there is no harm in downloading it to just choose a setting and press play for some great sound quality.

However, we'd warn you to only download it if you have the time to take a course and learn where to find all it can do in the muddled menu.
