F1 2010 keeps you up to date on this year's F1 season

The 2010 Formula One season is now well underway and sure enough tongues have been wagging despite the fact that it’s only a couple of races old.

A snore-some opening race in Bahrain caused critics to suggest that the sport needed a kick up the backside to become exciting again, only for the next race in Australia to prove those same people wrong with an action-packed race that proved how brilliant F1 can be when it wants to.

Those very same fans which kept the faith and cheered Jenson Button to victory down under will want to make a beeline for F1 2010, an iPhone app which aims to put the world’s number one motor sport in the palm of your hand.

It offers live commentary for each race, top news stories, real-time standings, individual profiles for each team and an in-depth analysis of each championship circuit for the 2010 season.

That’s a pretty substantial array of information and even though it’s all available online at no cost, having it all in once place is definitely encouraging. There’s also plenty of historical data packed in there as well, should you wish to educate yourself on the 60-odd years of F1 racing.

However, by far the most enticing element of the entire application is the presence of push notifications which allow you to stay abreast of developments without even having to be in front of the television.

These notifications will alert you to all the most vital events of each race weekend, including qualifying stats, race results and driver and constructor standing information.

When you consider that many F1 races take place at different times, only the most dedicated fan will be able to watch every single event. These automated notifications are therefore a real godsend, allowing you to get up-to-speed without even having to think about it.

This aspect of F1 2010 almost makes it worth the entry fee alone, and the fact that it comes wrapped up in so much information simply enhances the appeal of the package.

The only drawback is that the app is only valid for the 2010 season, which we assume means you will have to shell out for a newer version when 2011 rolls along. Also, the asking price is a little steep, although at the time of writing it’s currently on half-price special offer.

Still, if you’re a hardcore F1 aficionado then this is unlikely to put you off making a purchase; when you consider that this isn’t an official app you can’t help but be impressed by the level of detail and comprehensiveness. Petrol-heads should download at the earliest opportunity.
