With Jenson Button’s recent high-profile switch to McLaren from Brawn and the latter team’s astonishing purchase by German motor industry behemoth Mercedes, the world of Formula One is certainly buzzing with excitement right now – which is no mean feat when you consider that the 2009 season ended a couple of weeks ago.
Still, as those aforementioned events have proven, the lack of a current championship campaign until next March next year doesn’t mean that the F1-related news stops, and during close-season it most definitely helps to have a decent news app on your iPhone so you don’t miss out on any breaking stories while you’re out and about.
F1 News is essentially an spruced-up RSS reader which focuses solely on sites devoted to covering the world’s most glamorous sport. The app’s main page presents a list of all the breaking news stories taken from these sites, which include the likes of F1 Minute, Total F1 and even the relevant sections of The Guardian’s website and the BBC’s sports area.
You can control the number of stories that filter through using a separate menu, which lists every site and a switch to toggle them on or off. So if you’re a fan of a particular web portal and will only ever listen to that site’s opinion, then you can make that the only one that appears in your news stream.
In addition to news, you can also view the latest images from the world of Formula One, but you’ll need to register with thefanclub.com first. The same goes for the online forum, too.
F1 News is incredibly useful if you’re looking to keep abreast of the very latest happenings on trackside, but at the end of the day it’s not actually doing a tremendous task. All of the news stories simply link directly to the site they’re taken from, so essentially this app is basically doing what a standard RSS feed would do – it’s just that the sites have been pre-selected for you.
Still, while it doesn’t reinvent the wheel in this regard F1 News is still useful if you want quick and easy access to several different F1 new sources. It’s also being offered entirely free of charge, so only the very negative amongst you will have the temerity to grumble about its shortcomings.
