Mill Colour Review

We review Mill Colour, an iPhone app that adjusts the colour of your snaps

Published on Nov 11, 2009

So many iPhone camera apps, so little time. Today we're taking a look at Mill Colour.

When you first open up the application, you're given the option to head over to the info screen. We recommend taking up this offer as it will teach you a little about the developer’s illustrious background.

It tells you that The Mill is 'the most awarded visual effects company in the world working across all moving image platforms.' The company has offices all over the world and we guess it has put Mill Colour together to get its name around.

The info page states that the app has been 'designed by [its] team of colourists to emulate primary grading within a high-end digital grading suite'. Pretty fancy words but what do they mean? Lets take a look.

You can take a fresh photo or select one for your digital album. The 'Looks' menu provides you with eleven filters that change the feel of the image. The more obvious bases are covered such as a 'black and white', 'bleached' and ‘70s’, all of which are subtle and convincing. Different filters affect images differently depending on the subject matter, so experimentation is best to find the look you're after.

Once you're satisfied that your photo has the look you want, you can then adjust the colour settings. This menu allows for some impressive fine-tuning of your snaps. A slider at the bottom of the screen allows you to adjust the levels in tiny increments. Pressing the 'Mode' button will give you the option to change the level that the slider effects and you can choose between lift, gamma, gain or saturation.

In terms of features, that's pretty much it for Mill Colour. The interface is easy to navigate and looks smarter than your average investment banker before the recession. This is a very specialised app and in terms of color adjustment for your photos, we can’t imagine it being done much better than Mill Colour. However, its specialisation will limit the app’s appeal a little.

If you’re after an app for this purpose, then head over the App Store right away. If you're after something a little more multi-purpose, the Camera Genius app is still the way forward.
