Quad Camera review

We review Quad Camera, an application that adds a little flavour to your iPhone’s camera

Published on Sep 21, 2009

It’s been said before, but the iPhone’s camera is far from its most endearing feature. The web browser is awesome, the touch interface is large and responsive and the whole thing works like a well-oiled machine. The camera however, is average at best. Quad camera adds an interesting spin on your lackluster lens, culminating four or eight shots into collage snap.

Essentially Quad Camera is a photo effect app and is made by the same group of photography enthusiasts behind www.toycamera.com. Taking a photo in Quad Camera activates the lens multiple times and then lays the photos out next to one another in a square or rectangular shape.

The amount of time that elapses between the photos can be adjusted from one tenth of a second to a maximum of three seconds. The benefit of opting for the longer time scale is that you have more time to adjust the position of the viewfinder to an interesting angle.

The application lets you take photos in four different layouts. You can take four photos in a square shape or four photos in portrait format set end to end to create a row of photos. Quad Camera also allows you to take eight photos in one shot in a four by two format or in an eight by one format as seen in the screen shot above.

In addition to the multi-shot options you can also mess around with the colour variation of the photos. The ‘greyscale’ option takes photos in black and white which always helps deliver an element of depth to a photo even if its take on an average camera such as the iPhone’s.

Options are also provided for vivid, dull and bright shots to be taken which basically mess around with the colour saturation of your photography. This is one of those camera effect apps that require a little experimentation and messing around with to get the best results.

Most photo apps these days seem to have access to social networking sites such as Big Canvas PhotoShare but Quad Camera is a little lacking in this department. This is a shame as it can be fun to instantly share your creations with others. Besides this fairly obvious downside however, Quad Camera is a lot of fun and a good way to bring some variation to your iPhone photography.
