We Review Mixology, the complete drink mixing and bar tending guide
Published on Sep 15, 2009
If you like your martinis and shooters or want to know how to rim your glass or shake your cocktail then Mixology could be your ultimate bartending and drink mixing guide.
Mixology can help you choose a drink, then teach you how to mix it, shake it and stir it.
You can choose to either peruse through a rather sizable list of drinks, or narrow your search by certain categories. You can add drinks to a favourites list so you can be sure to find specific recipes fast, which is always nice when you’re in a desperate hurry for a drink! And if you really like it, you can recommend it to a friend.
Looking for a drink in particular? Simply search for it directly and save yourself some time. The only downside to this is, once you have searched a certain word, you are unable to close the search box and will be attempting to peruse through a list of different rum drinks on a screen space that is no more than 1cm high
A slot machine and ‘mix it up’ option helps you find new and exciting drinks to try. Alternatively, if you don’t want something too random, you can put a hold on the spirit, the mixer or type of drink you want and see what it recommends you have with it. From there you are given ingredients and directions on making your new find.
If it’s all a little too much for you there is a bartending guide to introduce you to everything you need to know, from stocking your drinks cabinet with the right tools to mixing your own drinks; and if you're not happy with the instructions, you can change between US and metric measurements.
Mixology also offers its own virtual drinks cabinet so you can store the list of drinks that you have in your real cabinet at home. This might make it easier when it comes to choosing which drinks to mix, and means you’ll never find yourself with half a cocktail because you’re missing several ingredients from your cabinet. But even if this does happen, don’t worry, because this application can show you where your nearest liquor is…
Except it can’t, and it won't. Although there is an option to search for a the nearest offy, you're taken out of the Mixology application and dropped into Google Maps. From there you'll find only liquor stores in America (due to this being an American application), and even then the search only recognises six stores in the whole of the US.
And bear in mind this is an American application when it comes to perusing drinks. You may be desperate for a gingerbread Mojito, but you just won’t know if the sparkling water in your cupboard is club soda, soda or soda water… and all you wanted was a drink.
So if you want to have a bit of fun and try your hand at cocktail making, then give this application a go. If you’re an alcoholic with a short temper, maybe you should just head to the nearest pub, though don’t expect Mixology to tell you where it is.
