To try and protect the increasing number of Android tablets, McAfee has announced its Mobile Security app and WaveSecure Tablet Edition.

McAfee Mobile Security acts like the software you can get on your PC or Mac. It works in real-time to protect you from viruses, worms and spyware, notifying you if something decides to attack your tablet.

You can also remote lock data to ensure it doesn't easily leave your device, if at all, and back-up and restore data if you need to wipe a device or wish to protect yourself if your tablet dies a death.

There's also protection from other nasty things like dodgy websites and phishing. When browsing the web you get a colour-coded rating, helping you steer clear of harmful links.

Unlike a home PC, tablets are portable, which means it could be left on a train or stolen from you.

At this point, protecting your data is a must.

McAfee offers two options at this point - an audible warning and/or instructions you can send to your tablet, which the thief or kind person can read to return it.

You can also remove data remotely. Simply find a PC or mobile with internet or send a text and you can erase anything you don't want anyone else to view.

Todd Gebhart, senior vice president and general manager of consumer, small business and mobile of McAfee, said:

'With device growth eclipsing PCs, consumers need tools to not only protect their personal information, but also to provide safeguards for business data should they decide to use that device for work.'

'It’s far too easy to leave a mobile device in a cab or at the airport, which can mean lost photos, contacts and other important content. Also, the threats to mobile devices are in many ways the same as in the online world. Beyond device lost or theft, users can be hacked, infected or phished on a mobile device just as easily as they can online.'

On mobile WaveSecure is $19.99 and Mobile Security is $29.99 per year but the app themselves are free to download - we've approached McAfee to find out if the tablet edition is the same price.
