The Android SlingPlayer app may be a tiny bit more expensive than on other platforms but we think it's worth it to have access to your Slingbox wherever you are

SlingPlayer for Android is now freely available from the Android app store, providing Slingbox Solo and Pro owners full control on the move.

We knew that an official Android SlingPlayer app was on the way but the pre-registration page gave no clue as to when exactly it would arrive.

Priced at $29.99, the app will set you back £20.20 (correct at time of writing), which is just a smidge more expensive than the BlackBerry, Symbian, webOS and Windows versions and a few pounds more than the Apple iOS equivalent, which is priced at £17.99.

Details on the purchase page state that only the Solo, Pro and Pro-HD work with SlingPlayer for Android, but early feedback indicates that the Classic version seems to play nicely with certain Android phones. Officially, “The Slingbox Classic, AV, and Tuner are not supported for use with the SlingPlayer Mobile on Android, although they may work with some configurations.”

If you do have a phone/box combo that is compatible the app will allow you to playback live or recorded TV over Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G connections.

Naturally, you can pause, fast-forward, rewind and schedule recordings but it goes a step further, allowing video on demand or pay-per-view services whilst away from your living room.

For more info or to purchase the app, simply search for SlingPlayer on the Android Marketplace – it’s available now.
