There's a new browser on the block for the Android OS, don't expect to see it on the iPhone anytime soon

An Android compatible version of Opera Mini 5 is now available to download from the Google Android Marketplace.

Following the unveiling of the Windows Mobile version last week, dejected Android owners can now get their hands on the tab-friendly browser for free.

As well as opening up Android to the possibility of tabbed browsing, Opera Mini 5 also comes with a speed dial short cut screen, and password and bookmark management.

The appeal of Mini 5 over the stock browser are the claims of ultra-quick surfing, achieved by compressing the data by up to 90% in its remote servers before sending the massively reduced package back to the phone.

The fact that it's all done off-handset reduces the demand on your phone's performance, freeing you up to open up yet another app in the background.

To get your hands on the Opera Mini 5 beta app, simply download it from the Android Marketplace or visit the Opera download page and follow the on screen directions.
