“Despite our complaints, we did come away impressed with the Google Android operating system. There's huge potential for the G1 (and any Android devices that follow) to become powerful minicomputers as developers create more applications for the open platform. But still, the G1 doesn't quite offer the mass appeal and ease of use as the iPhone, so it won't be a good fit for someone making the jump from a regular mobile to their first smart phone.”

“Apple finally has a competitor in the phone market. The T-Mobile G1 may not have the visual panache and artistry of Apple's UI, and some basic features are missing or slightly undercooked, but in terms of navigating the phone's myriad and diverse feature set, Google has created an interface in Android that is fun, intuitive and quite powerful.”

“We've waited a long time for Google to let Android come out to play, and it looks like this new mobile OS has the potential to be a major player. Everything about Android bodes well for its future, while its open source nature should mean that it will evolve at an exponential rate. But impressive as Android is, the G1 itself is far from the cutting edge handset I'd hoped it would be. That's not to say that the hardware is intrinsically bad, because it isn't...However, what can't be ignored is that there are far better designed, better featured and better looking smartphones out there right now.”

“This is one of those classic cases of the operating system having so much potential, but it's not going to be a success from day one. Our suggestion would be to wait 6 months to a year and by then you'll have so many handset choices (perhaps even the Touch HD) that will offer a far better, sexier, more consumer focused, offering that this will be old news and look, well, rather crap.”
