Part of the Samsung PC Studio software allows you to back up your contact information straight off your Samsung X820 into Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. You can also use the same system to synchronise your Calendar and Tasks as well, so your phone can take on the role of personal organiser and diary too (Figure 1).
You may not receive a software CD with your X820, but you can download the latest PC Studio from the Samsung website. Once you have installed it, either attach your phone to a spare USB port on your PC via the accompanying USB cable, or pair your phone with the computer via Bluetooth, then connect to it.
To back up your SIM contacts, click on the ‘Synchronise’ icon to launch the PC Sync application. Before you start synchronising, it is worth checking that your settings are correct (Figure 2). Go to Tools then click ‘Options’. The first thing you’ll need to do is ensure that your information is getting synchronised with the right program. Choose either Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express (Windows Address Book).
Now you need to make sure that your phone and PC synchronise the right content, as you don’t want your contacts being overwritten by out of date information from your PC, and vice versa. In the Options, click on the ‘Sync Type’ tab. Now choose the type of transfer you want to make. Normally you may want to leave this set to ‘Normal sync’ as it allows you to change content on both your PC and phone without too much risk of copying over something. If you simply want to store your existing phone contacts on our PC choose ‘Phone to PC’ and press OK to return to the main PC Sync window.
You can also choose what type of information you want to sync. Make sure the button marked ‘Phonebook’ is ticked. You can synchronise calendar items and tasks as well. Now click on the ‘Sync’ icon to begin synchronisation with your PC (Figures 3 & 4).
