Setting up Internet Access

If you need to set up or change an Internet Profile, don't worry

Set up an internet profile to browse web pages using the integrated WAP browser, and send and receive MMS messages and email

The Samsung X820 comes fully equipped with a WAP browser to let you surf the internet while you’re away from a PC. It offers GPRS and EDGE technology to provide enhanced data rates used for faster web browsing.

Most current phone contracts now support GPRS data transfer, although you may well be required to pay ‘data fees’ per MB transferred. If you’re unsure whether your contract includes GPRS data transfer, or if you want to find out about data fees, contact your network provider.

Setting up an Internet Profile

A Samsung X820 bought on contract will come with internet settings pre-programmed in which cover the major mobile service providers. By default they may be Vodafone, 02, T-Mobile, Orange, Virgin Mobile, BT Mobile and Tesco Mobile. If you need to set up or change an Internet Profile, don’t worry – it is very straightforward.

However, you will need to find out some information from your network provider before you start the setup process:

Proxy IP: A series of four numbers, each up to three digits in length, separated by full stops.

Proxy port: A single number, up to four digits in length

APN address: Varies between network providers and type of contract (Pay monthly and PAYG). It should look similar to an internet address.

Login ID: Usually very short and simple, but varies between providers

Password: Usually very short and simple, but varies between providers

Once you have this information, that’s all you need to start the set up process. From the standby screen press Menu to enter the main menu.

  • Scroll left once to highlight ‘Browser’ and press Select (Figure 1).
  • Scroll down to highlight the seventh menu item, ‘Browser settings’, and press Select (Figure 2).
  • Here you’ll see a list of preset Internet profiles that you can choose between if you’re on one of the listed networks. If not, you’ll need to add a new connection. Press Options and then scroll down to highlight ‘Add new connection’ and press Select (Figure 3).
  • First you’ll need to enter a Profile name so that you can identify the profile later on. Enter a name of you choice, such as ‘Internet’, then press Down to highlight ‘Homepage URL’ (Figure 4).
  • Enter the website address you would like to use as your homepage, then press Down.
  • Press Down to highlight ‘Proxy’ and make sure the box is ticked. If not, press the i button in the centre of the direction pad
  • Press Down to highlight ‘IP address’. You’ll need the information you found out from network provider for this bit. Enter the provided number here. Note: the full stops will be entered automatically.
  • Press Down to enter the Proxy port. Type in the port number you were given.
  • Now press down until you reach a button marked ‘Bearer’. This allows you to choose how you connect to the internet. Unless your contract does not allow GPRS access, press left or right on the direction pad to ensure this is set to ‘GPRS’ for faster internet access.
  • Press down to highlight ‘Advanced settings’ (Figure 5) then press the ‘i’ button in the centre of the direction pad to enter an extra menu.
  • You’ll start with the ‘APN’ highlighted. Enter the APN address your network provider’s APN address (Figure 6).
  • Press Down to highlight the Login ID field, then enter your new one (Figure 7).
  • Do the same for password, then press Save and you will return to the previous settings.
  • Make sure you press Save once more to store your new Internet profile and return to the ‘Browser settings’ menu.

Last of all, you need to set your browser to use your new profile:

  • Highlight your new profile in the ‘Browser settings’ menu. Note that it may appear above the pre-set items (Figure 8).
  • Press Options, then choose ‘Activate’ and press Select to set your browser to use the new profile (Figure 9).
