Connecting a Bluetooth device to the Samsung Tocco F480

You can set up and use Bluetooth quickly and easily on the Samsung Tocco F480 - we show you how to pair devices from headsets to PCs

Published on Aug 11, 2008

Bluetooth can be an extremely useful way of connecting wirelessly to another device, whether it's a computer, PDA, printer, headset or another mobile phone.

Numerous devices now offer Bluetooth connectivity. Different types of device allows you to do different things with Bluetooth, depending on their functionality and purpose. Bluetooth can be used to transfer images, music and other files between devices like mobile phones, PDAs and PCs, listen to music via streaming to wireless headphones or speakers, and communicate with other devices including GPS receivers and printers. One of the most common uses, of course, is for wirefree handsfree headsets for in-car use.

The Samsung Tocco supports a range of Bluetooth functionality, and you can see a list of options with explanations of what they mean by pressing Help in the Bluetooth settings menu.

Pairing with Bluetooth devices
The procedure for connecting, or 'pairing' Bluetooth devices is fairly straightforward. You won't necessarily have to pair the Tocco with another device to connect via Bluetooth - for instance, you can accept images and other files sent from unpaired phones or computers, and send images to other unpaired devices.

But for some devices, such as headsets, pairing is necessary. Pairing can also enable you to do more than simply send or receive content - you can browse files on other devices, for instance, or allow another device to browse your files.

To pair your Tocco with another Bluetooth-enabled device, first you have to activate your Samsung Tocco's Bluetooth functionality and make your phone visible (see our related article How to set up Bluetooth on the Samsung Tocco F480 for easy to follow instructions).

  • From the standby screen, press Menu (Figure 1).
  • In the main menu, press Bluetooth (Figure 2).
  • In the Bluetooth screen, press Activate (Figure 3).
  • Bluetooth will be switched on, and your Tocco will automatically search for other visible Bluetooth devices within range (usually around 10 metres radius). Any devices it identifies will be displayed onscreen in small circles with their Bluetooth names underneath (Figure 4).

To pair a device such as a Bluetooth handsfree headset, you will have to check the maker's instructions to enable it for pairing. This should be a fairly simple procedure. You are also likely to need a Bluetooth pairing PIN code (something like 0000) - this will be listed in the device's instruction manual.

  • Initiate the headset or other device's pairing mode.
  • On the Tocco's display, press Search. After a few seconds the new device should appear onscreen (Figure 5).
  • On the Tocco's display, touch the circle representing the device you want to pair, and drag your fingertip to the large blue circle in the middle of the screen (representing the Tocco) (Figure 6).
  • A message pops up informing you that the devices are connecting. In a few moments a panel appears with Enter PIN on it (Figure 7). Press this to bring up the virtual numberpad. Type in the password PIN code for the device, supplied by the maker (usually something simple like 0000) (Figure 8). Press OK.
  • In the Enter PIN panel, press OK (Figure 9).
  • Note that when pairing the Tocco with other Bluetooth-enabled devices with secure mode activated, such as mobile phones, PDAs and computers, you will have to type in a PIN code on both devices. In this case, if none has been pre-set, you can choose your own PIN code. After you have typed in the PIN code in the Tocco, a PIN entry request will pop up on the device you are pairing. Type the same PIN numbers into both devices to make the connection.
  • An onscreen pop-up confirms that the devices are pairing, and a link between the device and the Tocco is illustrated onscreen (Figure 10). You are now able to use the Bluetooth device with your Tocco.

To see what type Bluetooth services are available with a paired device you have paired, tap the device icon shown on the Bluetooth indicator screen. A pop up menu appears, offering several options. Press the Service list option (Figure 11). A list of supported Bluetooth features for the device appears onscreen (Figure 12). Press Back to return to the previous screen.

Can the Tocco automatically connect to bluetooth devices once they have been paired? My old Nokia N73 did this, whenever I was sat at my PC or when I turned on my bluetooth earpiece. If it can, How do you set this up. If not, why?
