Using the FM radio on the Samsung G600

Do more than just listen to music on the G600's FM radio - why not set programme reminders and alarms, and record clips too?

The FM Radio on the Samsung G600 is easy to use, sounds great, and lets you record clips that you can listen to later or use as your ringtone.

First connect the supplied headphone adapter into the multi-function (power) socket on the side of the phone and attached the supplied headphones or your own preferred pair.

To open the radio, from standby mode click Menu, highlight FM radio and click Select (Figure 1) . The radio application's tuning wheel appears, along with the current selected FM frequency.

To switch the radio on, click Options and, if the first item says 'FM radio on', highlight it and click Select or just press 1 (Figure 2). The radio will start playing.

To adjust the volume, click the volume control button on the left side of the phone up or down, and the volume level between 0 and 14 will appear on screen.

Tuning
To tune the radio manually, click the left and right nav buttons to move up and down 0.1MHz at a time. For automatic tuning, hold down the left and right nav buttons until the marker on the tuning wheel stops at the next frequency with a strong signal (Figure 3).

When you've found one of your favourite channels, save it by clicking Options and pressing 4 to Add to preset channels (Figure 4). To view your presets, click Options and press 5 to open Open preset channels. Highlight the frequency and press the centre nav key to listen to that channel. Unfortunately there's no way of adding a channel name alongside the frequency, which is an annoying oversight.

You can also add a frequency manually, but clicking Options, pressing 5 to Open preset channels, clicking Options again and pressing 3 to select Add. Now enter the frequency of the channel you want to hear (including the first '0' if it's below 100MHz) and press Save. You'll see the 'Added' message and the frequency added to the list of preset channels. Press the centre nav key when the frequency is selected to listen to it.

Setting a frequency as your alarm tone
Once a channel is in your presets, you can set its frequency to play as your wake up alarm, through the G600's loudspeaker.

From the main radio screen (with the tuning wheel) click Options and press 5 to Open preset channels. Highlight the frequency you want to wake up to (see Figure 5) and click Options. Press 6 to Set as alarm (Figure 6), and the alarms window will open. With Wake-up alarm highlighted, click Select (see Figure 7). If the entry under Alarm says Off, click the right nav key to change it to On and the Alarm time entry will become active. Click down to highlight this and enter the time you want to be woken up via the keypad (Figure 8). Click Save to confirm the alarm and click the red End Call key once to return to standby mode.

At the alarm time, your phone will start playing the chosen radio station but note - you must have the headphones plugged into the multi-function socket on the side of the phone as they act as an antenna for the FM radio.

Programme reminders
Once a channel is in your presets, you can set it up to play at any given time so that you don't miss your favourite radio shows.

From the main radio screen (with the tuning wheel) click Options and press 5 to Open preset channels. Highlight the frequency you want to listen to and click Options. Click 7 to open Programme reminder (see Figure 9).

You'll see the three available programme reminder slots. To set a reminder, highlight a slot and click Select. If the entry under Reminder says Off, click the right nav key to change it to On and the Date and Time fields will become active.

Enter the date using the keypad and click the down nav key to highlight Time.

Enter the time in 24-hour clock format using the keypad and click Save (see Figure 10).

The Reminder1 entry on the Programme screen will now show the time and date of your programme reminder (Figure 11). To add another reminder, highlight Reminder2 or Reminder 3 and follow the steps above.

At the reminder time, your phone will play your alarm tone and prompt you to listen to the radio programme or exit (Figure 12). Click Listen to hear the radio show or Exit to quit.

Note - you must have the headphones plugged into the multi-function socket on the side of the phone as they act as an antenna for the FM radio.

Recording a radio clip
You can record directly from the Samsung G600's FM radio into a sound file which you can listen to in the future or assign as a ringtone.

To record a clip, while the FM radio is playing (Menu, FM radio, Options, FM radio on) click Options and press 6 to select Record (see Figure 13). Recording will begin immediately. Under the frequency, you'll see the recording time, and at the bottom of the screen, you'll see a red square. To stop recording and save the sound file, press Stop. Pressing Pause pauses the recording but does not save the sound file. After pressing Pause, press Record to continue recording to the same sound file, or press Stop to save the file (Figure 14).

Once your file has been saved, you can find it in the My files section of the main menu. From standby mode, press Menu, highlight My files and click Select. Highlight Music and click Select or just press 3 to access the Music files.

You radio recordings are in the FM radio clips section. Highlight this and click Select or press 2 to enter. Press Options to use the clip. You can play the file through the phone or via a Bluetooth headset (press 1 for this menu), send it by SMS, email or Bluetooth (press 2) or set it as a ringtone, caller-specific ringtone or alarm tone (press 3).
