The Samsung E900 hides its 2-megapixel camera inside its sliding fascia - pop it open and the lens, LED flash and self-portrait mirror become visible.

The E900 has a top resolution of 1600x1200, and can capture at five other resolutions down to 240x320, and at four quality settings - superfine, fine, normal and economy. Its autofocus feature is perfectly adequate, but you can adjust white balance according to lighting conditions, and tweak the exposure sensitivity using ISO settings equivalent to 100, 200 and 400.

At the top resolution of 1600x1200 and in its best superfine mode, the E900 takes sharp, well-defined images. Colour balance isn't great though, and this example has a decidedly pink hue
The E900's 4x digital zoom brings out the detail without too much degredation, although the increase in size has softened the image a little
Digital zoom isn't advisable at lower resolutions - without zoom this 240x320 image in clear and sharp, but when magnified it loses all definition and pixel noise is clearly visible

The difference between Fine (above) and Economy (below) modes can be seen here, with the Fine mode slightly sharper (compare the motto) and Economy displaying a lot more noise around key features like the cross, the tower and the gap in the trees
This photo taken inside a well-lit room is certainly colourful, but is far from sharp, with softened edges, clearly banding along the walls and poor contrast in very light areas
