Control music playback, build playlists and stream your music wirelessly

Once you have copied music across to your Samsung SGH-D600 handset or to your MicroSD card, you can use your phone as an MP3 player. Although the handset does not contain a 3.5mm headphone socket, it does come with its own set of headphones or you can use the stereo Bluetooth profile to control and stream music to a wireless pair of headphones.

By default, the D600’s MP3 player is assigned to the shortcut of the Up key on the direction pad. However, if you want to change it, you can still access it through the main menu. Press Menu on the standby screen to enter the main menu, then scroll up and right to highlight ‘Applications’ (Figure 1). Press Select and you will see MP3 player (Figure 2) at the top of the list. Press Select again to start it up (Figure 3).

The direction keys act as shortcuts to various media controls. Pressing Up will take you into your playlist. Left and Right act as skip controls and Down will stop the track. The OK button acts as the play/pause control (Figure 4).

Before you can start playing your tunes, you need to create a playlist. Press Up on the directional pad to enter the playlist. To add files, press Options, then scroll down to highlight ‘Add music via’ (Figure 5). Press Right to bring out a new menu, then select the location where your music is stored. Although the handset has space to store digital music files, you’ll find that space is rapidly used up as you take digital photos, download ringtones, receive texts or add detailed contacts.

If you have music stored on your memory card, scroll down to highlight ‘Memory card’ and press Select. Navigate into the folder where you have stored your music, for example in ‘Music’. This will show all the music stored and you can choose individual tracks by highlighting them and pressing OK. You can also select a whole folder by using the ‘All’ button at the top of the menu.

When you have made your selection, press Add to create your playlist and return to the playlist menu (Figure 6). Press OK to begin playing. You can generate up to four playlists at a time.

In the MP3 player menu, you can use the Options button to set various playmodes and adjust the equaliser. Press Options then scroll down to ‘Settings’ and press Select. Now you can adjust repeat mode, shuffle and equaliser settings, and it lets you choose between different player skins (Figure 7).

To stream to a pair of stereo Bluetooth enabled headphones, ensure that they are switched on and paired with the D600 handset. Enter the MP3 player and press Options. You will automatically start off highlighting ‘Play via’ so press Right to open the menu further then scroll down to highlight A/V headset and press Select. Your phone will connect to your headphones and start audio streaming.
