Transfer music to your D600
You can enjoy your music wirelessly
With a bit of patience you can make your Samsung D600 as good at playing digital music as any Walkman phone
The Samsung SGH-D600’s music playing capabilities are a little understated, but with a bit of patience, you can make your phone every bit as good at playing MP3s as a Walkman phone. The D600 even supports stereo Bluetooth, so you can enjoy your music wirelessly.
Your handset may not come with a software CD but you can download the latest Samsung PC studio from Samsung’s website. Once you have installed it (Figure 1), you’ll have all the tools you need to convert and transfer music, videos, photos and more. You’ll need to connect your handset using the accompanying USB cable for the fastest transfer speeds, although you can use Bluetooth as well.
To manage your music files, click on the ‘Manage multimedia files’ (Figure 2) icon to launch the Multimedia Manager application. Multimedia Manager will transfer music to you phone memory, but unfortunately won’t let you copy directly to your memory card.
We’ll explain how to solve that shortly. Multimedia Manager is best used for transferring the odd one or two audio tracks to your phone memory and, more importantly, converting file types for playback on your handset.
The D600 is only compatible with MP3 and AAC format music, but it is likely that some of you music will use another format, such as WMA. Multimedia Manager will convert these to AAC for you and save the converted version alongside the original. First you need to add some files to your Multimedia Manager library:
- Click ‘File’, followed by ‘Get files’. Then choose ‘By searching’ (Figure 3)
- Unless you want to add photos and video at the same time, make sure only the ‘Music’ button is selected.
- Choose the folder on your PC where you keep your music files from the pane on the left, then press the ‘>>’ arrow.
- Press ‘Next’ and your files will be added to the Multimedia Manger database (Figure 4).
Multimedia Manger will clearly show what type of file your music is stored in. If you need to convert simply select a single file, or select multiple files, then right click and choose ‘Convert the selected files…’. Now press ‘OK’ and the program will make a copy of the music, in a format compatible with your handset.
The trickier part is getting music on to you handset. Because the phone’s internal memory is very limited, it is a better idea to use the expandable MicroSD memory. The fastest way to do this is to use a memory card reader, then you simply drag and drop the files into the right folder on your card. If you don’t have a card reader, you can use the phone’s USB connection:
- While the phone is connected to the PC via USB, press Menu to enter the main menu.
- Scroll down and right to highlight the ‘Settings’ icon. Press Select.
- Scroll down once to highlight ‘Phone settings’ and press Select.
- Now go down to ‘USB settings’ and press Select.
- Highlight ‘Mass storage’ and press OK.
Now your phone will act like a portable storage device and will appear in your My Computer folder. Drag and drop files (Figure 5) into this to copy files straight to your memory card.
