Bluetooth is now ubiquitous in modern handsets due to its simple interface, free operation and low-power consumption. You can use Bluetooth to connect you handset with a wireless headset or simply share files, photos, ringtones and music with your PC or other people’s handsets.

Changing your handset name

Before you set up your Bluetooth connections, it is a good idea to create a unique name for your handset. That way, when you want to synchronise your handset, or let someone else connect to it, you know that it’s your phone on the system. To change the name of your handset, use the following steps:

  • From the standby screen, press Menu to enter the main menu.
  • Scroll down and right to highlight ‘Settings’, then press Select (see figure 1)
  • Move down the list to the sixth item, called ‘Bluetooth’ and press Select (see figure 2)
  • Now scroll down to highlight ‘My phone’s name’. Beneath it, the current name of your phone will pop up. By default this is usually ‘Samsung SGH-D600’ (see figure 3)
  • Press Select then delete the current text. Enter your preferred new phone name then press OK.

Switching on Bluetooth

From the ‘Bluetooth’ section in the Settings, you can choose whether to turn on or turn off you Bluetooth connection. Simply highlight ‘Activation’ and press Select. Now choose whether you want it on of off (see figure 4)

You should also consider whether you want your Bluetooth status to be visible or not. To start with, it is a good idea to have your status set to visible because it makes finding and pairing the phone a bit easier. Once you have paired your phone with your other Bluetooth devices, you can set the visibility to off, which means that other people can’t tell that your Bluetooth is on, but you can still quickly connect to other wireless devices.

To alter the visibility settings, enter the ‘Bluetooth’ section in the settings, then scroll down to ‘My phone’s visibility’. A pop up message will tell you your current status, and you can change it by pressing Select.
