Setting up Internet Access on the D600

The D600 comes fully equipped with a WAP browser

Set up an internet profile to let you browse web pages via the integrated WAP browser

The Samsung SGH-D600 comes fully equipped with a WAP browser to let you surf the internet while you’re away from a PC. Be aware that because the handset is not equipped with EDGE technology, it may struggle with large pages or those containing large images. However, it does offer ordinary GPRS connectivity so you shouldn’t have too much trouble connecting quickly to your network provider’s WAP service.

Most major network providers now offer support for GPRS data transfer and you will be charged per MB, called ‘data fees’, on the data you receive rather than call duration. If you need to find out more about data fees, contact your network provider.

Setting up an Internet Profile

Most Samsung D600s bought on contract will come with internet settings pre-programmed in that cover the major mobile service providers. By default they may be Vodafone, 02, T-Mobile, Orange and Virgin Mobile. If you need to set up or change an Internet Profile, don’t worry – it is very straightforward.

However, you will need to find out some information from your network provider before you start the setup process:

Proxy IP: A series of four numbers, each up to three digits in length, separated by full stops.

Proxy port: A single number, up to four digits in length

APN address: Varies between network providers and type of contract (Pay monthly and PAYG). It should look similar to an internet address.

Login ID: Usually very short and simple, but varies between providers

Password: Usually very short and simple, but varies between providers

Once you have this information, that’s all you need to start the set up process. Press Menu to enter the main menu.

  • Scroll left once to highlight ‘Browser’ and press Select (Figure 1).
  • Scroll down to highlight the fifth menu item, ‘Profile settings’, and press Select (Figure 2).
  • Here you’ll see a list of preset Internet profiles that you can choose between if you’re on one of the listed networks. If not, you’ll need to write over one of these so choose a network that you know isn’t yours and press Select (Figure 3).
  • First you’ll need to enter a Profile name so that you can identify the profile later on (Figure 4). Enter a name of you choice, such as ‘Internet’, then press Down to highlight ‘Home URL’.
  • Enter the website address you would like to use as your home page, then press Down.
  • You have now highlighted ‘Bearer’, which allows you choose how you connect to the internet. Unless your contract does not allow GPRS access, ensure this is set to ‘GPRS first’ for faster internet access.
  • Press Down to highlight ‘Proxy’ and make sure this is set to ‘Enable’
  • Press Down to highlight ‘GPRS Settings’ then press OK (Figure 5).
  • This will take you into a further submenu and at the start you’ll automatically be highlighting Proxy IP (Figure 6). You’ll need the information you found out from network provider for this bit. Erase the existing info by holding C, then enter the number. The full stops will be entered automatically.
  • Press Down to enter the Proxy port, clear the existing item and enter your new one.
  • Press Down, then clear the box and enter your APN address.
  • Press Down to clear the Login ID field then enter your new one
  • Do the same for password, then press Save and you will return to the previous settings.
  • To access internet services via GPRS, you won’t need to complete the GSM settings, but it will be a good idea to clear the existing entries. Highlight GSM Setting and press OK. Now clear all the fields with C and press Save.
  • Press Save once more to store your new Internet profile.

Last of all, you need to set your browser to use your new profile:

  • Scroll down to the sixth item in the Browser menu, called ‘Current Profile’, then press Select
  • Choose your new profile from the list (we called it ‘Internet’) and press Select (Figure 7).
