How to send and receive emails on your Samsung Bound B2700

The Samsung Bound is more of an out-and-about phone than most, designed to survive outdoor knocks. While you're away from home, you can also use it to pick up your emails

Published on Mar 9, 2009

The Samsung Bound B2700 is a rugged little device, but it's good for more than just staying in one piece. You can also use it to send and receive emails from your normal webmail account.

This email functionality is very handy for keeping up to date with your messages on the move, whether for just an occasional look or for more frequent email checking. As well as viewing email messages, you can view files sent as attachments with a simple click, or you can send your own or forward emails to other contacts.

You can use the email function on the Samsung Bound B2700 phone for web-based email accounts and email accounts supplied by your internet service provider, provided you have a standard POP3 or IMAP4 account.

Setting up: the basics
The set-up procedure is quite straightforward if you follow these instructions, though you will have to have some of your email account details to hand. Below, we outline what you'll need and where to find them. Once you have these to hand, it'll take just a couple of minutes to tap in the details to get you started.

And once you've set up your email account (or accounts), you can adjust other settings, such as the frequency with which the phone looks for new email and a variety of sending options.

POP3 technology enables users to access and retrieve emails remotely from systems not directly connected to their device or network. You'll need to refer to your email provider to see whether it does offer POP3 functionality, but currently a lot of web-based email providers (include Gmail and Yahoo!) offer the service - though for some providers it is only part of a premium service and not available to standard users.

If you’re using a web-hosting package with mail forwarding, you’re almost certain to have POP3 email. If you’re using an office email system and want remote access to your mail, you’ll need to contact your IT department and ask if the system is configured for POP3.

Details you'll need
You will need some information from your email provider in order to begin the set up process:

  • Email address - Your full email address.
  • Username – This is usually the part before the ‘@’ in your email address, although it does vary between providers; check the settings page of your email account or ask your provider if you’re unsure.
  • Password - Your usual email password.
  • Incoming (POP3) server - If it's not in our table of server settings, your email provider will be able to supply this. You'll usually find POP3 details on their website.
  • POP3 (incoming) port - Your email provider will be able to supply this and you'll usually find their details on their website. Settings for this may be pre-loaded in the phone.
  • Outgoing (SMTP) server - This will depend on which mobile phone network you use. See our table of server settings for details.
  • SMTP port – If it's not in the table, your email provider will be able to supply this and you'll usually find their details on their website. Settings for this may be pre-loaded in the phone.

Setting up your email
With this information to hand, setting up your email is straightforward:

  2. Highlight Messages. Press Select (Figure 2).

  13. Scroll down to highlight My address. Enter your full email address (Figure 14).
  14. Scroll down to highlight User name. Type in your user name - usually the part before the ‘@’ in your email address (Figure 15).
  15. Scroll down to highlight Password. Type in your regular email password (Figure 16).
  16. Press the Save softkey to store your new settings. You are now taken back into the main Email accounts menu.
  17. To make the email account you have set-up your active account, highlight and press the central navigation button to select. A tick appears in the box next to your account (Figure 17).
  18. Press Back to return to the Email menu. You are asked: Save? Press Yes (Figure 18).

In the email menu you can select options for sending and receiving email - such has how often you want the phone to check your email account, or whether you want to have original messages copied on your replies - just like with regular email.

You're not required to adjust these settings, but it's worth checking them in case there are any options you want to change. These options are listed under the Sending options and Receiving options headings in the Email settings menu.

Receiving and sending email
To look at and download your emails, go back to the Messages menu. If you're in the standby screen, press Menu, then highlight Messages and press Select as you did before (Figures 1 and 2).

  • In the Messages menu, scroll to highlight Email inbox. Press Select (Figure 19).
  • In the Email inbox you can get subject headers for your downloaded email messages from your email account. These will be listed once the phone has contacted your email account. To download messages press Options, then highlight Download. Press Select (Figure 20).
  • The phone will now connect to your inbox and begin downloading messages. When your new emails have been downloaded, a message appears onscreen. You will see the subject headers listed, and you can scroll down through your emails using the navigation pad (Figure 21).
  • To change the way emails are listed (by date, sender, subject, size) press Options. Scroll down to highlight List by and press Select (Figure 22). You can now scroll down to choose the ordering option you prefer (Figure 23). Press Select.
  • To view emails in your email inbox, highlight the email subject headers you want to look at, and press the central navigation key to select. They will appear larger onscreen, with full subject headers scrolling across the top (Figure 24).
  • To retrieve the full email, press Options, then press Retrieve (Figure 25). Press OK. You can now see the complete email text (Figure 26).
  • Press the Options key for a list of options, such as Reply, Reply to all, Forward, Delete, Save items, and more.
  • If an email has an attachment you want to view, scroll to highlight it onscreen, press the central navigation button, and then press View (Figure 27).
  • The attachment appears onscreen (Figure 28). You can view attachments in a selection of standard file formats, including jpegs, Word documents, PDFs and so on, with the option to save them to your phone or memory card.
  • To exit your email inbox, press Back several times, or press the Call End button to go back to the main menu.

Sending emails
Sending emails is very straightforward. You can reply to emails you have received (as outlined above), or you can compose and send them in a similar way to text messages.

  • From the standby screen, select the main Menu and Messages option as before (Figures 1 and 2).
  • In the Messages menu, highlight Create message (Figure 29). Press Select.
  • Highlight the Email option and press Select (Figure 30).
  • You can now compose your email. You can scroll up or down to highlight the appropriate part of the display to select the email address, subject, and message panels (Figure 31).
  • Once you have composed your email, press the central navigation button to send it off.
