You can set up the Samsung U800 to receive and send email from you usual email accounts - we show you how
Do you wnat to use emai on your phone? You can set up your Samsung U800 to send and receive email messages (with attachments) from regular email accounts.
BlackBerrys may grab all the headlines when it comes to email, but like many mobile phones, the Samsung U800 can be quickly and easily configured to work with your regular POP3 email accounts.
You can compose, send, receive and forward emails, view received attachments in standard file formats, download and save attached files, or send files stored on your phone or memory card as attachments.
The basics
It's a straightforward process to set up your email. You may find some mobile network settings pre-loaded, but even if you don't it's a simple matter of tapping in required details.
And once you've set up your email account (or accounts), you can adjust other settings, such as the frequency with which the phone looks for new email and a variety of sending options.
POP3 technology enables users to access and retrieve emails remotely from systems not directly connected to their device or network. You'll need to refer to your email provider to see whether it does offer POP3 functionality, but currently a lot of web-based email providers offer the service - though in some cases it is only part of the premium service and not available to standard users.
Currently, Gmail is one of the free email providers to offer POP3 functionality for no extra cost, while Hotmail users will have to upgrade to a premium subscription. Yahoo Mail users can, at the time of writing, still activate POP3 as part of the free service.
If you’re using a web-hosting package with mail forwarding, you’re almost certain to have POP3 email. If you’re using an office email system and want remote access to your mail, you’ll need to contact your IT department and ask if the system is configured for POP3.
Details you'll need
You will need some information from your email provider in order to begin the set up process:
- Email address - Your full email address.
- Username – This is usually the part before the ‘@’ in your email address, although it does vary between providers; check the settings page of your email account or ask your provider if you’re unsure.
- Password - Your usual email password.
- Incoming (POP3) server - If it's not in our table of server settings, your email provider will be able to supply this, and you'll usually find POP3 details on their website.
- POP3 (incoming) port - If it's not in the table, your email provider will be able to supply this and you'll usually find their details on their website.
- Outgoing (SMTP) server - This will depend on which mobile phone network you use. See our table of server settings for details. Suitable settings for your network may already be pre-loaded in the U800.
- SMTP port – If it's not in the table, your email provider will be able to supply this and you'll usually find their details on their website. Settings for this may also be pre-loaded in your U800.
(Note: your email provider's POP3 settings will also contain details of the Outgoing (SMTP) server. You don’t need this to receive email on your phone.)
