Tizen to get Vodafone debut in 2013 in UK?
Linux-based mobile OS Tizen could see its UK debut with Vodafone, after launching in Japan with NTT Docomo
Samsung’s market share has risen greatly in 2012, making the OEM the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer, shipping over 50 million devices in Q2 alone, so news that it’ll be the first to launch a device running Tizen in Japan, and most likely the UK, will likely be welcomed by die-hard Samsung fans and recent converts alike.
Tizen, for those of you who’ve not heard, is a Linux-based, open-source operating system which can be used across smartphones, netbooks, tablets and other devices alike, and the OS, which evolved from Nokia’s extinct MeeGo platform appears to have plenty of promise owing in no small part to its heavy use of HTML5, which will allow coders to produce apps with the same selection of tools that they use to churn out Web apps.
Word has it that Vodafone has already shown an interest in carrying Tizen-based Samsung devices when/if they come to the UK market, so hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to see what the software is all about but things may not be plain sailing for the fledgling OS.
In fact 2013 is shaping up to be the year of the new smartphone platform, with Firefox OS, BB 10 and Sailfish all set duke it out for market share.
That said, we’re keen to see new, inventive software come to the fore, and we don’t care how it gets here and, above all else, we’re looking forward to getting to grips with Tizen in 2013!
