Vodafone and EE are reportedly prepping a deal with Virgin Media that will secure both networks’ customers free Wi-Fi on London’s Underground

EE has officially confirmed that it will be offering its customers free Wi-Fi on the London Underground. The service will go live in early 2013, according to a tweet from the network

Here's EE’s tweet, which has since been removed: ‘travel on the tube? From early 2013, EE customers will be able to get Wi-Fi access on the London Underground at no extra cost. Details soon.’

Virgin Media will be providing the service for EE and is reportedly also in talks with both Vodafone about rolling out Wi-Fi for its customers too, according to Pocket-Lint.

Virgin Media currently provides free Wi-Fi in 72 tube stations around London. The service is powered by T-Mobile’s network, which is, of course, part of EE, along with Orange.

Pocket-lint spoke to Virgin Media in September about possibilities for the TV, mobile and broadband service provider to buy a 4G package from EE. A spokesman explained to us at that time that talks between the two companies are ‘always taking place’.

EE, according to reports, is Virgin Media’s preferred network partner. Details of Vodafone’s service are pretty scant at present, but you can expect to hear more as we approach Q1 2013.
