Apple has started taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4S and carriers have announced contract deals

Apple has enabled pre-orders of its new iPhone 4S smartphone ahead of the October 14 release date.

You can pre-order direct from Apple starting at £499 for the 16GB model, £599 for 32GB and £699 for 64GB

However, Apple has sold out its stock already and shipping of sim-free handsets has been pushed back by two weeks.

Alternatively you can go with Vodafone. For starters you can trade-in your old iPhone for varying sums of money. A proper old-school iPhone first gen will get you a mere £23 but at the other end of the scale a 16GB iPhone 4 will give you £212, which you can then use to buy the new iPhone 4S if you wish.

You’ve got a couple of options with Vodafone's contracts, you can either spend £139 on the iPhone 4S as part of a 12 month contract at £51 per month. With this deal every month you’ll be granted 1200 minutes, unlimited texts and 750MB of data. You’ll also be able to take part in Vodafone’s three month unlimited data trial.

The other option is to get the iPhone 4S for free as part of a two year contract with 1200 minutes, unlimited text messages and 750MB of data for £46 per month. T-Mobile is also offering a virtually identical deal. Pre-ordering with Vodafone also gets you £59 off your first bill.

Orange will give you a 16GB iPhone 4S for £46 per month with 900 minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB of data. Or there’s the 64GB model as part of a two year contract at £61 per month and a one-off initial payment of £99 for the phone.

Another option is Phones4u, which will get you a deal through Orange for the 64GB iPhone 4S as part of a two year contract at £46 per month and an initial payment for the phone of £189. You’ll also recieve 1200 minutes, 3000 texts and 750MB of data.

Phones4u also offer a contract via Vodafone for the 16GB model with a two year £41 per month contract and a £59 price tag on the handset. A different deal gets you the phone for free at £46 per month. Either choice gives 900 minutes, 3000 texts and 750MB of data per month.
