OSX Lion's ‘Spaces’ coming to iPad
Apple OS X Lion’s highly usual UI feature ‘Spaces’ is one step closer to featuring on the iPad
Apple’s OS X Lion UI feature ‘Spaces’ is reportedly coming to the iPad.
Having some of Apple OS X Lion’s UI features on the iPad would be amazing – it’s the stuff of Apple fanboi wet dreams. Well, there’s no need to dream anymore – Spaces for the iPad is said to be ‘one step closer.’
According to Patently Apple, ‘The USPTO has revealed a patent that shows that Apple to bringing Spaces to the iPad. In fact, if you look closely in one patent graphic, you may actually be getting a sneak peek of OS X Lion on iPad.’
That’s right. OS X Lion on the iPad. Now, who wouldn’t want to see that?
Having this ability on the iPad would, in theory, allow users to touch one button and switch spaces to another application – say, from Safari to Pages.
However, Spaces on the iPad could be used in multiple scenarios. For instance, the report of Apple’s recently filed patent cites: image editing, drawing, presenting, word processing, website creating, disk authoring, spreadsheet making, game playing, telephoning, video conferencing, e-mailing, instant messaging, workout support, digital photographing, digital videoing, web browsing, digital music playing and/or digital video playing – so, basically everything.
Spaces on iPad will work by creating a ‘plurality of workspace views’ that the user can assign apps to, then close, and open another workspace view and do the same, and so on.
In short, the user can build up workspaces on the iPad, load them with applications, and switch between them by using multi-finger gesturing.
According to the figures in the report, activating these Spaces will be done via a pinching multi-finger gesture in the corner of the display.
You can read the all the technical details over at Patently Apple but we must warn you, it’s not for the faint hearted – lots of technical jargon!
Either way, Spaces on the iPad! We can’t wait.
