Nokia's N-Gage mobile gaming platform delivers a great gaming experience, enabling users to enjoy sophisticated gameplay with superb graphics, have a trial of games before they buy, compete against other N-Gage users anywhere in the world via the N-Gage Arena, enter online tournaments, and communicate with other users, challenging them to games, sharing tips, and comparing scores online.

The new N-Gage platform has been initially launched for select Nokia Nseries handsets - the Nokia N81 8GB, Nokia N81, N95, N95 8GB, and N82. So you can enjoy the full N-Gage service right now - all it takes is a quick download and installation of the service on your phone.

It's easy to download and install the N-Gage application. All you have to do is visit the Nokia N-Gage site, download the application to your PC or Mac, and then copy it over to your phone. You'll then be ready to create a player name and visit the showroom.

(Note, newer versions of the N95 may come with the full application pre-loaded. If you have an N-Gage icon in your menus that immediately starts up the N-Gage application rather than just runs a video teaser, then you won't need to download the application - you'll be ready to play.)

Downloading the N-Gage application
First you have to download the N-Gage application to your PC or Mac. It is available from the N-Gage website at www.n-gage.com or by clicking on this download link for PC or Mac.

Installing the N-Gage application
You can install the N-Gage application from your PC onto your phone by using supplied Nokia PC Suite software and the USB cable boxed with the phone, or simply by dragging and dropping the file into the phone's mass storage memory when the phone is connected via USB. The drag and drop method is required if you're using a Mac rather than a PC. The application should be stored to the mass storage memory rather than the device memory.

Using PC Suite
If you're using a PC you need to have the right version of PC Suite. You can download a suitable version of PC Suite here.

Instructions for installing N-Gage to your Nokia N95 are simple:

1. Start PC Suite on your PC.
2. Connect your N95 to your PC using the supplied USB cable.
3. Select PC Suite Mode in the dialog box on the N95.
4. Click the Get Connected button on PC Suite and follow the on-screen directions to enable the connection to your device.
5. Click the Install Applications icon on PC Suite.
6. Follow the on screen directions to transfer and install the N-Gage application (n-gage.sisx) file from your desktop to your N95.
7. Start the N-Gage application on your N95 by clicking the N-Gage icon in the Applications folder.
8. Now you're ready to create a player name and visit the N-Gage games Showroom to browse, trial and buy games.

Using Mass Storage Mode/Data Transfer (for PC and Mac users)

1. Connect your N95 to your computer using the supplied USB cable.
2. On your N95, select Data transfer (Figure 1). Press OK. Your device should now appear on 'My Computer/Finder' as an external drive or removable disk.
3. Copy the N-Gage install file (n-gage.sisx) from your computer to a folder on your N95's mass memory, such as the Other folder (Figure 2).
4. Disconnect your N95 from your computer.
5. Click on the Tools menu in the N95's main menu (Figure 3). Click on the File Manager application (Figure 4), and from it navigate to the memory card/mass memory tab. Scroll down to the folder (Other) into which you copied the N-Gage install file (Figure 5). Press select
6. Scroll down to highlight the N-Gage install file n-gage.sisx and click to start the installation process (Figure 6). Follow the on-screen instructions on your N95. You will be asked if you want to Install N-Gage Installer? (Figure 7). Press Yes and then press Continue. It may take several minutes or more to install the application. You will be asked to select an internet access point (Figure 8). Highlight the one you wish to use and press Select.
7. You will be notified when the installation is complete, and asked to reboot the phone (turn it off and on) after installation.
8. Start the N-Gage application on your N95 by clicking the N-Gage icon in the Applications folder (Figure 9).
9. The N-Gage application is now active on your phone (Figure 10). Now you're ready to create a player name and visit the N-Gage games Showroom to browse, trial and buy games. You can do this online on the N-Gage website or directly from your phone. Scroll across to see all the various options available on each tab (Figure 11).

Nokia's newly revamped N-Gage mobile gaming platform is set to launch imminently, delivering a sophisticated gaming experience with great graphics, multi-player interactivity, and much more. As well as being able to connect to other players, swapping tips, messages and screen shots, you can free trials of games to try before you buy.

The new N-Gage platform will soon be available to download on selected Nokia Nseries phones. However, although it's not been officially launched yet, Nokia is enabling owners of N95 and N95 8GB phones to download a First Access trial version of N-Gage - and a handful of sample games to play.

It's easy to download and install the N-Gage First Access application and games. All you have to do is visit the Nokia N-Gage site, download the application to your PC, and then copy it over to your phone. You can then be one of the first to try out the new N-Gage exerience for yourself - and, if you like, tell Nokia what you think about it...

Downloading the N-Gage application
First you have to download the N-Gage application to your PC or Mac. You can download the application with four trial games - Space Impact: Kappa Base, System Rush: Evolution, Hooked On: Creatures of the Deep, and Block Breaker Deluxe - all in one bundle, in a Zip file. It is available from the N-Gage website at www.n-gage.com/firstaccess or by clicking on this download link.

Installing the N-Gage application and games
You can install the games from your PC onto your phone by using supplied Nokia PC Suite software and the USB cable boxed with the phone, or simply by dragging and dropping files into the phone's mass storage memory when the phone is connected via USB. The second method is required if you're using a Mac rather than a PC. The application and games should be stored to the mass storage memory rather than the device memory (or to the memory card, if installing to an N95).

Nokia's instructions for installing N-Gage First Access to your Nokia N95 8GB are simple:

11. Complete the installation and start the game.

If at first you aren't able to complete the installation, you may need to attempt this process several times.

Using Mass Storage Mode/Data Transfer (for PC and Mac users)

1. Connect your N95 8GB to your computer using the supplied USB cable.
2. On your N95 8GB, select Data Transfer (Figure 1). Your device should now appear on "My Computer/Finder" as an external drive or removable disk.
3. Copy the N-Gage install file (.sisx) from your computer to a folder on your N95 8GB's mass memory, such as the Others folder (Figure 2).
4. Disconnect your device from your computer.
5. From the File Manager application on your N95 8GB (under the Tools menu), navigate to the memory card/mass memory tab (Figure 3). Open the N-Gage install file to start the installation process (Figure 4).Follow the on-screen instructions on your N95 8GB. It may take several minutes or more to install the application. You will be notified when the installation is complete.
6. Run the N-Gage application once to verify it is working. This can be found in the Applications folder in the main menu (Figure 5). Click on the N-Gage icon to launch the app (Figure 6).
7. Now you are ready to install the games. Re-connect your N95 8GB to your computer using the USB cable.
8. From your computer, copy the N-Gage game files (the .n-gage files) to the N-Gage folder on your mass memory/memory card (Figure 7). This folder is created the first time you run the N-Gage application.
9. Disconnect your device from your computer.
10. Start the N-Gage application on your N95 8GB by clicking the N-Gage icon in the Applications folder. The N-Gage application will detect your games and prompt you to install them (Figure 8). (If you are not prompted to install the game, use File Manager to open the game install file and start the installation process.)
11. Complete the installation and start a game (Figure 9).

It is possible to transfer the application to the N95 8GB via Bluetooth, but not the games files.

Why would you want to do that, you might wonder? Apart from the obvious answer - you want to control your business presentation without having to be stuck face down in your laptop.

Well think about it. PCs are increasingly becoming the hub of multimedia entertainment in the home. And what use is an entertainment device without a remote control?

Salling Clicker lets you control iTunes and Windows Media Player (and a ton of other apps) remotely. While most other remote controls - including Apple's own - stop at a simple play/pause/select/volume, your mobile phone and its screen become a fully functional interactive controller.

So in iTunes, for example, you can browse by Artist, Album, Song and even use the search function to find the track you want. You don't even have to be able to see the computer. And while that track is playing your Nokia N95's screen will show you the track info including duration and even show you a thumbnail image of the cover art. Smart.

This latest version 3.5 of Clicker offers one new feature that is tailor-made for the Nokia N95: Wi-Fi support. So if you have a home Wi-Fi network you can control your PC from anywhere that has network access.

Set-up is a breeze - after you've installed the software on your PC and phone a wizard simply asks you to assign a password for the computer and that's it. You can even use the N95 to control several different computers on the same network.

In practice, it works like a dream. Wi-Fi offers increased range and speed when compared with Bluetooth and we didn't experience any dropped connections - we literally left our N95 for hours at a time hooked up to our computer to control the office's music (as I write this I've just upped the volume on the Kooks' Jackie Big Tits).

At the moment Clicker only offers limited support for Windows Media Center - essentially everything that you can access via Windows Media Player. But the application is highly scriptable and Jonas Salling is working on fuller WMC functionality as I write. Apple Mac users will be glad to know that Front Row is supported in Clicker 3.5 - although you have to be able to see the Mac's screen to use it.

Of course, Clicker is not just a music remote. It comes into its own with presentation software such as PowerPoint and Keynote as not only can you control the slides remotely you can also view slide notes on your N95 and - in the Windows version - see a visual preview of the next slide.

There are scripts for a raft of other applications - everything from photo software to email. The software also supports 'phone events', for instance by fading down the volume of the music when there's an incoming call.

You can even make it automatically lock up your computer when you move away from it and unlock it when you return - a magic feat achieved by monitoring the strength of your Nokia N95's Bluetooth connection.

In short, Salling is a nigh-on essential purchase for anyone who owns a Nokia N95 (or any of the other 300 supported phones). The Wi-Fi support is spectacularly useful and has been implemented seamlessly.

The niggles that remain are so minor - such as the option to change the font size on the display - that you feel slightly guilty even mentioning them. Especially when the asking price for Clicker is a ridiculously affordable $23.95 (about 13 quid in real money).

Salling Clicker and the Nokia N95 go together like Pete Doherty and Crack. Only they're far more useful and entertaining and will probably last a lot longer, too.

When installing some themes to your Nokia N95, you'll see the dramatic message "Expired certificate!" (see Figure 1). This is because security measures within the Series 60 operating system only let you install themes which are less than six months old.

But all is not lost, and that great theme can be yours after all. You just have to move the date on your N95 back a year, install the theme, then change the date back to normal.

To change the date on your Nokia N95, follow these instructions:

• Click on the Menu button, highlight Tools and click the centre selection key (the 'OK' key) (Figure 2)
• Highlight Settings and click the OK key (Figure 3)
• Highlight General and click the OK key (Figure 4)
• Highlight Date and time and click the OK key (Figure 5)
• Highlight the date and click the OK key (Figure 6)
• Use the Right navigation key to highlight the year. To change the year back one year, press the Down navigation key once (Figure 7)
• Press the red End key to return to standby mode.

Now install your new theme. If you still see the Expired certificate error, change the year back another year and try installing again.

When it's installed, follow the instructions again, setting the year back to the present by highlighting the year and pressing the Up navigation key once.

Ever rushed out of the house only to realise half an hour later that you’ve forgotten to set the video? Sky users need never miss their favourite programmes with Sky’s Remote Record facility.

Remote Record lets you browse the TV schedules just as you would on your Sky digibox, check out programme information, and set your Sky box to record any programme. Sky advises that you should give the system 30 minutes’ notice before recording a soon-to-start show, but we found some programmes recorded when as little as 10 minutes notice.

You only need to download the small Sky by Mobile application to get started, and as the application’s interface is a scaled-down version of the regular electronic programme guide (EPG), there’s no learning curve for Sky users. The time it takes to load a new page can be quite slow, and as the EPG only displays 45 minutes’ worth of programmes at once, there’s a lot of scrolling and waiting to be done.

Saying that, the Programme Search facility which lets you search by programme name, channel, date and time, is a great time-saver, and being able to record programmes from the train, office or pub is not just very handy, it’s also very impressive!

Apart from Remote Record, Sky by Mobile also offers the latest news, sports and entertainment headlines, and access to Sky Bet so subscribers (you’ll need a separate Sky Bet account) can place bets on all manner of events straight from their mobiles.

On the downside, you may need to tweak your GPRS settings to get the programme to work at all, and Sky’s technical support have a habit of sending you back to your mobile network provider rather than attempting to talk you through the fix. The correct settings are included along with our guide to installing and using Sky by Mobile and Remote Record.

Setting up Remote Record

To set up Remote Record on your Nokia N95, you first need to register your viewing card by setting up a MySky account at http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/mysky.

Once your account is set up, you need to register for Remote Record via the Sky Active feature on the digibox. To do this:

1. Press the interactive button on your Sky remote control
2. Select Sky Active, then select Customer Support and pick Your Sky Features
3. Select Remote Record

Installing Sky by Mobile

You'll now need to download the Sky by Mobile application. Officially, Sky haven't produced a version for the Series 60 phones (which includes the N95), and so following instructions to download the software from http://mobile.sky.com/skyapp/skyapp.asp will result in a message that the 'Service is not available for your mobile device'.

However, there is a solution. You can download a generic Symbian version from Sky. Click on this link - http://mobile.sky.com/SBM/SonyE_novid/SkyMobile_SonyWithoutTv.jar - and save the file to your desktop. Upload it to your N95 directly via Bluetooth or using a USB cable and PC Suite. Once it's uploaded, click on the file (or the message in the case of Bluetooth) and click Yes if prompted to begin installation. You may also see a 'Security warning'; just click Continue, and when prompted to install the application to phone or card, highlight Phone memory and click Select.

After installation is complete, navigate to the Applications folder (Main menu > Applications) and scroll down to find Sky by mobile. Highlight this icon and click the centre selection key to open the application.

Using Sky by Mobile

The first time you use Sky by Mobile, you must enter your username and password. To enter your MySky username, highlight the Username field in yellow and press 5 to enter edit mode. Enter your username and click OK. Now highlight Password and press 5 to enter edit mode again. Enter your password and click OK.

Now press Login. If prompted to 'Allow application Sky by Mobile to use network and send or receive data?', click Yes.

The application will search for available access points. Highlight your mobile network connection (not a wireless LAN link - Sky by Mobile will only work with your WAP account) and click Select. If prompted a second time, select the same access point and click Select again.

The Sky by Mobile application should start loading and you should soon see the Home Page featuring three news sections, the TV guide and a link to Sky Bet.

Note for O2 users: if the program doesn't start (for instance if it freezes on connection or if you receive a network error), you may need to change your internet settings manually. See Manual settings for O2 users for instructions on how to do this.

To record a program, scroll down to Sky TV Guide and click the central selection key. Alternatively, click 4 to enter the TV Guide (clicking 1, 2, 3 or 5 will enter the corresponding section of Sky by Mobile).

You'll see a list of the channel subject areas just like those on the electronic programme guide (EPG) on your Sky box. Click the corresponding number to enter the programme guide for that subject, or scroll to highlight the subject you want and click the centre selection key. If you want to record a programme on the main terrestrial channels, choose All Channels.

The instructions screen will appear. Click OK to enter the EPG. Use the navigation keys to scroll around the schedules, and press the main selection key to view programme information, pressing Back to return to the EPG.

To record a programme, highlight the programme's name in the EPG so it's displayed in yellow, and press Record (the left selection key). You'll receive confirmation that your request has been sent to your Sky box. Click Back to return to the EPG.

Finding channels

The EPG displays 11 channels per page on the Nokia N95. To view further channels, scroll to the bottom of the page and press the down navigation key once more to see the next 11 channels.

To jump straight to a channel without scrolling through several pages, press the # key, enter the three-figure channel ID and press OK. The EPG will open with your chosen channel at the top of the screen.

Programme search

You can search through seven days' worth of programme names and show synopses. From the Sky TV Guide main menu, click * and you'll see the Programme Search instructions page. Click OK to begin your search. Click the main selection key to activate the highlighted field (from a choice of Name, Channel Name, Date and Time) enter your search text and click OK to confirm. Click Search for the search results. You can record a programme directly from the search results by highlighting the programme title and clicking Record.

Note: Programme search cannot be accessed once you're in the EPG, only from the Sky TV Guide main menu.

If the Sky by Mobile application doesn't run correctly on your Nokia N95, O2 users may need to tweak their internet settings to add a reference to a specific Access Point Network.

• Go to Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access points.
• Click Options, highlight New access point and click Select.
• Highlight Connection name, click the centre selection key, enter the name O2 Internet and click OK.
• Data bearer should be set to Packet data. If not, highlight Data bearer, click Select, choose Packet data and click OK.
• Highlight Access point name and click the centre selection key. Enter mobile.o2.co.uk and click OK.
• Highlight User name and click the centre selection key. Enter web and click OK.
• Prompt password should be set to No. If it's set to 'Yes', highlight Prompt password and click the centre selection key to change it to No.
• Highlight Password and click the centre selection key. Enter the password password and click OK.
• Click Back twice to return to the Connection page
• Highlight Packet data and click the centre selection key to open.
• Highlight Access point and click the centre selection key to edit.
• Enter mobile.o2.co.uk and click OK.
• Return to active standby and try logging into the Sky by Mobile application again. The application should now work.

The Nokia N95 can connect to the internet using a wireless network (WLAN) connection as well as a standard mobile web link. You can hop onto any WLAN connection - even protected ones as long as you know the password - and browse the web, send and receive email and use the phone's Maps application at high speed and without paying a penny to your mobile network provider.

Connecting to a WLAN via Active standby

If Active Standby is activated on your Nokia N95, your WLAN connection status is always visible from standby mode. The bottom line of the screen shows your WLAN status. If there are no wireless networks in the area, you'll see the message 'No WLAN network found'. If you're near a WLAN that you're not connected to, you'll see the message 'WLAN name found'.

To log on to this network, simply highlight the WLAN status line (Figure 1) and press the centre selection key. You'll see three options:

• Start Web browsing
• Search for WLAN
• Switch WLAN scan off.

Joining an open network

If you know that the WLAN the N95 has detected is an open, unprotected network (and needs no passcode to access), simply highlight Start Web browsing and press the centre selection key to go to your Bookmarks page and start browsing the web.

Joining a protected network

If the WLAN is protected, you'll need to enter a passcode to begin browsing. First highlight Start Web browsing and press the centre selection key. You'll be prompted to enter a 'WEP key for WLAN' (Figure 2). This is the passcode that your or a network administrator applied to the wireless router when it was set up.

Some WLAN configuration tools will set up WEP security on your wirless router using an easy-to-remember password, but the N95 needs you to enter the hexadecimal equivalent. If you're not sure what this is but you know the router's password, go to WEPKEY.com, enter the password into the top field, click Generate keys and the hexadecimal equivalent will appear below. Enter the first 64bit key into the field and click OK. If the code is corrects you'll be taken to the Bookmarks page and you can start browsing the web. If not, you'll see the message 'Invalid WEP key' and the blank field will reappear. Try the second passcode listed on WEPKEY.com and so on.

Searching for other networks

The Nokia N95 will usually detect the WLAN with the strongest signal. If that's not the network you want to connect to, highlight 'WLAN name' found and click the centre selection key. Highlight Search for WLAN and click Select. A list of detectable WLANs will appear. Highlight the one you want to connect to and click Connect to join, entering the passcode if necessary. Again, you'll be taken to the Bookmarks page and can start browsing the web.

WLAN authorisation icon

You only have to enter a passcode into the N95 once. You'll know that you're authorised to use a particular WLAN because a round icon like that next to 'mat' in Figure 3 will appear next to its name.

WLAN wizard

You can also connect to wireless networks using the WLAN wizard. To find this, open the main menu, click on Tools and scroll down and left to highlight WLAN wiz. (Figure 5). Press the centre selection key to open the wizard.

The WLAN wizard opens to show you the active WLANs in the area (Figure 6). To access a network, highlight its name, click on Options and select Start Web browsing. Enter the hexadecimal passcode if required, press OK and your ready to start browsing the web.

The Nokia N95's Maps application lets you plan a route between two locations, and draws up a step-by-step itinerary or route map for you to follow.

Maps will also link up with the N95's GPS tool to guide you from your present position to your destination, using voice commands just as a dedicated GPS system would.

First, make sure that you're connected to the internet, either via your mobile network provider or using a Wi-Fi connection.

Planning the route

From standby mode, highlight the Maps icon and click the centre selection key, or click the main menu button, highlight the Maps icon and click the centre selection key.

The GPS system will try and pinpoint your location around the globe. To by-pass the animated graphic, click Skip. The GPS will keep looking in the background.

Your location (or in the case of no GPS signal, your most recent location) will appear on a map on the screen.

If at this point you see a message reading 'No Internet connection. Please check your network settings', follow the instructions in the section Maps Network Settings, below.

To begin planning a route, click Options, highlight Plan route and click Select.

You now have to enter a Starting point and Destination for your route. To select a Starting point, highlight the top line and click the central selection key.

You have six choices (Figure 1).

• GPS position - Calculates your current position and installs that as your Starting point
• Landmark - Lets you assign one of your preset Landmarks (favourite locations) as your Starting point
• Recent - Remembers five recent locations and lets you choose one as your Starting point
• From map - Transfers you to the visual map. Using the navigation keys, move the cursor around the map, zooming in with the * key and out with the # key. When the cursor is over your starting point, press Select
• Address (Figure 2) - Enter the Number, Street, City, Post Code or Country of your Starting point into the fields provided, click Options and Search, and Maps will locate its full address. Highlight the preferred location on the results page and click Select to set that as your Starting point
• From guide - You can purchase a range of city guides to download to your Nokia N95. Highlight From guide and click Select, then use the navigation key to tab between Nearest guides (a selection of local guides), all Guides (guides for a selection of countries) and My guides (guides you've purchased). To buy a guide, highlight its title, click Options, highlight Purchase and click Yes to confirm the purchase. When it has downloaded, you'll be prompted to accept the licence agreement and taken online to confirm payment. You can then select a point of interest from a City guide as your Starting point.

Once confirmed, your Starting point will appear in the first line on the Route planner page. Now you need to select a Destination. To do this, highlight Destination and click the central selection key.This offers the same options as the Starting point menu, apart from GPS position (which would be really good if it could detect where you wanted to go!).

When you've selected your destination so that it appears in the Destination section of the Route planner page, you're ready to set your route parameters (Figure 3). Click Options, highlight Settings and click Select. Under the Routing tab, you'll see six options - Transport mode (by car or on foot), Route selection (shortest or fastest), Motorway, Tunnel, Ferry and Toll road (all four of which are yes/no options).

To change any setting, highlight the option, click Options, highlight Change and click Select to see the available options. Highlight your chosen option using the Up and Down navigation keys and click OK to confirm.

Click the right navigation key to see the General settings tab. This lets you set the System of measurement (metric or imperial), Backlight (on or off) and a Language for voice guidance.

When you've chosen your settings, click Back to return to your start and destination points.

To have Maps work out the recommended route, click Options, highlight Show route, click Select and the Route planner will calculate your route (Figure 4).

The resulting itinerary (Figure 5) will be displayed by default as a step-by-step guide, telling you when to turn, and onto which road.

You can also view a graphical representation of the route by highlighting any instruction and clicking the centre selection key, or by clicking Select from the itinerary, highlighting Show on map and clicking Select. Press the Up navigation key to go to the next junction and press the Down nav key to go back a step. Helpfully, the map rotates so that it's always pointing in your direction of travel.

There's also a route simulation (Figure 6), which animates your route and gives voice instructions of the 'turn left' and 'second at the roundabout' variety. The animation is timed according to recommended speeds on the roads. To see this, click Options from the itinerary or Show on map window, highlight Start simulation and click Select. Pressing 0 toggles between flat 2D maps and a 3D view, and you can zoom in with the * key and zoom out with the # key.

GPS navigation

If you have a GPS signal, your N95's Maps application can guide you from point to point. It works just like the route simulation, with voice commands and clear visual instructions, though it offers instructions based on your movements in real-time, giving you instructions as you need them.

To activate GPS navigation, click Options, highlight Start navigation and click Select.

GPS tracking

Maps can also be set to track your position on a road. Unlike the GPS navigation, this doesn't call out instructions, it just shows you where you are at that particular time. It's useful if you get lost and need to compare your current position in relation to the planned route.

To activate GPS tracking, click Options, highlight Start tracking and click Select.

Maps Networks Settings

If you see the message 'No Internet connection. Please check your network settings' when you start up Maps (similar to Figure 7), you need to assign a network to the application.

• To do this, click Options, highlight Settings and click Select.
• On the Settings screen (Figure 8), highlight Network and press the centre selection key
• When the Network page opens, highlight Default access point and press the centre selection key (Figure 9)
  
• A list of available networks will appear (both wireless WLAN networks and mobile web connections). Highlight the connection you want to use and click OK to see it in the Default access point field (Figure 10)

Everyone was very excited about getting the N95 in the office. Oooh, it’s got GPS, a 5-megapixel camera, a Video Centre, Lifeblog access, Wi-Fi connectivity and every other kind of application you could possibly wish for on your mobile phone, as well as some you’d never even dreamt of. But despite all the bells and whistles, I had my doubts about whether it would live up to the hype.

The N95 is a phone that aims to deliver a fantastic multimedia experience, and the innovative double-slide action is testament to this. Sliding the phone’s front panel upwards gives the user access to the conventional and easy-to-use keypad; sliding the phone downwards reveals controls for the Multimedia player and immediately rotates the phone’s screen to a landscape view.

The Multimedia section of the phone’s menu also has its very own special button located to the right of the directional keys. Whereas the Main Menu’s interface is set out in the Series 60’s usual tabbed manner, the multimedia section is set on a 3D wheel that spins round as you tab up/down or left/right to access different options - very swish.

With such a large screen, the N95 lets users enjoy a great Internet experience. Wi-Fi capabilities make getting online simple and much more cheaply than going via your network provider. Applications like Maps, Video Centre and the Lifeblog add new dimensions to the mobile web experience, ensuring that the N95 is up there with the more complicated smart phones in terms of Internet usability.

Sound on the speakerphone is clear, but unless you really want to annoy your fellow bus passengers you are best off investing in some decent headphones as the bundled set are pretty poor and fail to do justice to the Music Player. You may not want to be listening to tunes on the N95 too much either, as its battery life is not great. The wealth of applications suck all power out of the device, and if you are using the Maps application or Music player regularly, you will need to recharge almost every day.

The camera does take excellent images thanks to all those megapixels and the quality is reflected in the amazing 2.6-inch colour screen. All the usual camera effects are in place, and the N95 also features a secondary camera on the front of the phone for video calling. Pictures in natural light came out looking spectacular and when viewed on a larger screen still looked fantastic. Saved images and videos are also viewed on a 3D wheel-style gallery, adding to the overall slickness of the N95.

As with all modern mobile phones there are a number of applications that are particularly difficult to use. It took a good while to get to grips with the Video Centre application and after a long hard slog, it is still unclear who would use this feature on an everyday or even a weekly basis.

A number of applications available on the N95 are rendered redundant by a lack of support from UK networks. The Visual Radio function which enable users to access an interactive element to their radio experience can only be used with one network provider in the UK (O2) and group calling is also a no-no at present. This makes the N95 a real beast of technology unable to fulfill its potential as of yet.

As the mobile phone market moves faster chances are, if and when these applications are ever supported, a bigger and better phone will have left the N95 languishing in the bottom drawer. Nevertheless it’s a powerful and stylish phone that lays down a marker for future models in the forthcoming Nokia portfolio.

Nokia N95 technical specifications.

With the Nokia N95 at your fingertips it is possible to check on messages that are sent to you during an ordinary working day, and to send emails to people if you need to do this.

Create an email
To create an email from the main screen select the Main Menu button to the left of the directional keys and choose Messaging.

Use the scroll key to go down to the mailbox you have set up and click to open it. Use the left Selection key to choose Options then choose Create message, then E-mail.

A new screen opens up. In the To field type the email address you are sending to. If the person is in your contact book already then choose Options then Add recipient then select the person from your contact database.

Scroll down and write the subject of your email, then scroll down further and write the content.

Now choose Options and then Send.

Immediate send and sending later
If you have set email up to send immediately the send will happen straight away. If you have set it up to happen at the next manual connection the message will go when you make a connection. In this case you need to choose Options then Connect to send messages and then Options and Disconnect when you are finished.

Retrieving email
To pick up email go into your mailbox as described above then choose Options then Retrieve e-mail then choose All to collect everything in your mailbox. Choose Options and Disconnect when you are finished.

You can use settings to receive new email automatically, but this may increase data traffic to your N95 and could be more expensive than manually retrieving email.

Deletion
When you choose to delete emails you can opt to delete them from the phone only or the server as well. Deleting from the phone only will mean you can pick messages up again from your main computer later on, deleting from the server will mean they are gone forever and you can’t pick them up from your main computer later.

If you use a POP3 email account such as a web based email or email provided by your Internet Service Provider, you can pick up messages to and send them from your Nokia N95.

You might want to do this on a regular basis or just sometimes, but the procedure involved in setting up an account on the phone is the same.

If you find you have difficulty configuring all the necessary settings on your phone, you can visit Nokia’s online setup service at the Nokia UK support site

This provides standardised settings for many of Nokias phones and can automatically configure your phone via text message. You will need to supply some details about your Internet Service Provider and network operator.

Set up your mailbox
Tap the Nokia Menu Key and choose Messaging. Scroll down to Mailbox and click. You will be told ‘no mailbox defined. Define now?’ Choose Yes.

A wizard starts which walks you through the process. First choose Start with the left selection key. Choose your mailbox type using the scroll key and clicking to ensure the correct one is selected with a dot to the left of its name. If you have webmail or an email address from your Internet service provider, choose POP3. Click Next.

Type in your email address. Use the star key to pull up a symbols list so you can choose the ‘@’ symbol and the 1 key for the dot. Choose Next.

Enter your incoming mail server then choose Next and your outgoing mail server then choose Next. Now choose your ‘access point’. The choices will depend on which operator you are using at the time and you may need to ask your operator for the right information. You can get the phone to ask you every time if that might be useful. Make your selection then choose Next.

Now give this mailbox a name. Make it meaningful, something like ‘Gmail email’ if your email provider is Gmail, for example. When this has been entered choose Finish and you will be told ‘Mailbox setup complete. Settings can be viewed and edited in e-mail settings’. Click OK.

Personalise the settings
Now you need to tell the Nokia N95 how to behave when it is picking up and creating email.

When viewing the messaging main screen scroll to the mailbox you just set up and click it to open it. Now choose Options then E-mail settings. From here there are several sets of settings to make.

- Choose User settings.

• In the space under My name type your own name. This will be used to identify you instead of your email address when the recipient device supports that.
• Under Send Messages click the scroll key to choose between sending messages immediately they are created or at the next manual connection
• Under Send copy to self click the scroll key to choose between copying yourself in to all emails sent or not
• Under Include Signature click the scroll key to choose whether you want to include a pre-defined signature on all emails. If you choose yes, you are asked to define the signature now.
• Under New email alerts click the scroll key to choose whether you want the N95 to tell you when new email has arrived. This is useful if you have chosen to retrieve emails automatically – see ‘automatic retrieval’ below.

- Choose Retrieval settings.

• This is where you tell the phone how much of each email to retrieve. You might want to retrieve less if you think you will end up spending a lot on connection time. The choices are; to retrieve headers only, to set a size limit on downloads, or to retrieve messages and their attachments.

- Choose Automatic Retrieval.

• If you need to get your email regularly then you can set up the phone to pick up messages at regular intervals. Choose Disabled if you want to pick up email manually

- Choose Connection settings.

• Here you can change any of the basic email settings such as incoming and outgoing email servers and can give the phone your login password

Set up a bookmark
To save the page you are looking at as a bookmark choose Options with the left selection key and pick Save as bookmark from the menu list. Use the name automatically given or type your own, then pick OK with the left selection key.

The page will now appear listed when you open the Web browser. The N95 creates bookmarks automatically as you move around. Choose the Auto bookmarks folder in the Web Main menu to see these.

Move around within a Web page
When you are at a Web page use the directional buttons to move around. It moves an on-screen cursor. When this is over a link you want, press it to select.

If you move the cursor quickly a Mini Map appears of the page you are on with a section highlighted with a red rectangle. Stop scrolling and the section inside the red rectangle fills the screen.

To turn this feature on or off when using the browser choose Options with the left selection key, then scroll down to Settings and click it. Now scroll down to where it says Mini map and click to turn this either on or off.

Set some preferences
Customise how the browser works by choosing Options with the left selection key, then scrolling down to Settings and clicking it. In Settings you will be presented with the following options:

• General - Access point, Homepage, Mini map, History List, Security
• Page - Load content, Screen size, Block pop-ups, Font size
• Privacy - Auto. bookmarks, Form data saving, Cookies
• Web feeds - Automatic updates

Make the settings that suit you best then choose Back. You can access these options and change at any time.

You might not need to use the Web from your phone constantly, but it pays to know how to make the most of its browser just the same. Those occasions when you need to check on a snippet of information to make your day flow well, from a train time to a cinema location, can be a breeze rather than a trauma if your Web skills are honed.

Go to a Web site
To open the Web browser tap the Nokia Menu Key to the left of the directional keys. Scroll down to choose Web and the browser will open. If this is the first time you’ve used the N95 it’ll ask you to define a home page. Select No with the right selection key.

Select Options then Go to web address. Type a Web site address starting with ‘www.’ Remember the 1 key gives you the dot between each element of the address. Press the left selection key to Go to the Web site.

You will then be asked to select an access point. Choose either your network provider or if you are in a Wi-Fi area search for WLAN or select a server. You will then be directed to your selected website.

The Nokia N95 features a secondary camera just above the screen for video calling, however, to use this application you must first invest in a USIM card (an advanced SIM used in 3G mobile phones) and be in the coverage of a UMTS (3G) network.

If you have all of the above requirements then making a Video Call to someone else also with all of the above technology is simple.

From the start-up screen:

• Select the Main Menu button to the left of the directional keys
• Select Contacts
• Choose the contact you wish to participate in your Video Call
• Select Options then scroll down and select Video Call
  
  

The Video Call may take a little time to you will see the message “Waiting for a video call” when the call is successful you will see two video images and hear sound through the loudspeaker.

You can then chat away. All video calls are charged at a video call rate. For more information of this contact your network provider. Not all network providers allow for video calls, but with the growth of in-built 3G this is slowly changing. If you want video calling as a main feature of your phone then check with the manufacturer and your provider that it is possible.

The Nokia N95 has an interesting application dedicated to downloading and playing videos. The Video Centre allows users to access their own videos, Nokia branded videos and internet videos. It also allows you to access video content sites like YouTube with the click of a button.

This application was dreamt up prior to sites like YouTube making their websites mobile friendly. However, with the help of RSS feeds, the Video Centre allows you to access a variety of internet based videos. Just add a news feed to the video centre and save special videos to your phone.

To access the Video Centre:

• From the stand-by screen select the Main Menu button
• Select Applications

Once in the Video Centre tab left and right to access the following options:

• Internet Videos – Videos you can access by setting up RSS feeds
• Add New Services – This choice allows you to access the Nokia Video Service Catalogue where you can set up a Video Centre section for YouTube, Reuters and more, once set up these feeds will appear in the Video Centre main menu.
• Nokia Nseries – Where you can view Nokia branded videos (adverts)
• My Videos – Videos that you have saved into the Video Centre application

To add a new Internet Video:

• Select Internet Videos in the Video Centres menu
• Select Options
• Scroll down to and select Feed subscriptions
• Select Options

You will then asked to input the name and address of your feed do this and your new feed will appear in your subscription list. To refresh your videos select Options then Refresh feeds in the Internet Videos menu. To delete a feed select Options in the Internet Videos menu and select Delete feed.

The N95 is a multimedia-fuelled mobile phone and Nokia is so keen for its users to live a multimedia-fuelled lifestyle that it has introduced the ‘Lifeblog’ application to a number of its mobile phones.

The Lifeblog application features on all N-series mobile phones from Nokia and is a software package compatible with your Nokia N95 and PC. It allows users to organise and synchronise multimedia files, transferring them directly from their phone to their own personal online blog.

To use the application you first have to set up your own blog. Nokia recommenda using the Typepad service found at www.typepad.com but there are other blog services out there that are compatible.

The best thing about Lifeblog is that it allows you to upload photographs to the Internet quickly without having to access your Flickr or Facebook account. However, you are expected to pay for the privilege. A Typepad blog can cost from $50 up to $300 (£25 to £150) per year - pretty pricey.

You are able to Lifeblog directly from your mobile phone but it is recommended that you synchronise the software with your PC. This will free up memory space on your phone and allow you to browse bigger files.

To check out the Nokia N95's Lifeblog applications, follow these simple instructions:

• From the start-up screen select the Main Menu button

Once in the Lifeblog menu you will see a collection of recent photographs, files received and text messages from friends. You can mark files as favourites, send files direct from the application, create notes that are added to files, and view a timeline of files where data is stored in a chronological order. Using the timeline function, you can search for files from a particular date or recover lost items from a specific date.

To upload a file to the internet you first have to set up a blog and input your blog settings into your N95. To input blog settings, access the Lifeblog application as instructed above and select Options.

• Then select Settings
• Select Blog

You then need to input the details you received when setting up your blog online. These details are:

• Account Name
• Username
• Password
• Server Address
• Internet Access Point

Once these settings are saved to your phone you will be able to upload files to your blog by simply choosing a file, selecting Options and then selecting Post to Web.

Although your Nokia N95 comes packaged with some excellent themes you can download new ones via various Internet websites that may be more suited to your personal tastes. Themes are self-contained packages featuring wallpaper, screensavers, backgrounds for different phone modes and sometimes new icons.

Downloading themes is easy, simply access the website you wish to download from (some themes are free to download others you may have to pay for so check the small print!) search for Nokia N95 and discover what themes are available then download the themes to your computer. Once this is done Bluetooth the theme from your computer to your phone and you will receive a message containing your new theme.

When attempting to install your new theme you may receive a warning message that the theme is not safe to use, more often then not themes are not dangerous to your phones software but always check out who is providing the theme in order to safeguard yourself from any unwanted information, bugs or viruses.

When installing a theme you could find that the theme is out of date and needs a certificate upgrade, get round this by changing the date on your phone or by searching for a more up to date theme online.

You can change the overall look of your Nokia N95 by changing its theme. Doing this will change your phone's colour scheme.

Change your Nokia N95's theme by using a default theme or by downloading new ones from the internet.

After downloading and installing new themes - via Bluetooth or using the USB cable - you will be required to access and apply them via your Themes menu.

To see the themes available on your phone and choose a new one press the Nokia Menu key to the left of the directional keys then choose Tools, Settings, General, Personalisation then Themes.

You will then be presented with the following menu:

• General
• Menu view
• Wallpaper
• Power saver

The General option houses the default Nokia themes and also gives you an option for downloading themes, by clicking on any of the default themes your phone will automatically set the chosen theme.

To preview a theme highlight it and the press Options and select Preview, any downloaded and installed themes will also be saved in this folder. The Menu view section enables you to change the default Grid menu view to a simple List.

You can change the default Wallpaper to an image of your choice either taken with the N95 camera or an image that has been sent to your handset.

Finally you can use the Power saver option to turn off text, animation of the date and time to save power.
