The Nokia N95 8GB is a heavily featured, high-end Symbian S60 smartphone. Among its key features is built in A-GPS (Assisted - Global Positioning System) technology, and a Nokia Maps navigation application which enables you to pinpoint your location on an onscreen map.

The Maps application enables you to look up routes and get detailed navigation instructions for these. You can plan routes from your current position to a specific location or plan routes from a defined starting point to another finishing point. The phone can calculate the route in a few moments, and it is displayed as a series of step-by-step, turn-by-turn text itinerary or on a map illustrating your route.

With a voice navigation upgrade from Nokia, the GPS system can then guide you to that location using step-by-step instructions and voice guidance as you go along, almost instantly adjusting for your changing position as you move along, just like a standalone in-car Sat Nav system. With the N95 8GB's Maps application, you can choose instructions for driving or for travelling on foot.

You can get routing instructions to numerous places, searchable by address, or for specific locations from a large number of categories containing "points of interest" . There are thousands of preloaded "points of interest" across a wide range of categories - from stations and tourist sites to bars and petrol stations.

You can browse by category to find a nearby point of interest under a particular category - for example, the nearest branch of a bank or Thai restaurant. Or you can add your own locations you may want to look up regularly to the Maps' "Landmark" list.

The Nokia N95 8GB comes out of the box loaded with mapping information for the whole of the UK and Ireland so you can plan routes quickly and easily. If you go to another country covered by the Nokia Maps software, you can download maps as you go along, which are updated in the phone's memory.

It's also possible to upgrade the Nokia N95's Nokia Maps satellite navigation software, adding guides and step-by-step voice navigation over the air - although you have to pay extra for these.


Planning new routes
In standby mode, press the main Menu button (Figure 1).

In the main menu, highlight Maps and press the central navigation scroll key to select (Figure 2)

This launches the Nokia Maps application, which takes a few seconds to load (Figure 3).
You may get a message onscreen "No Internet connection. Please check your network settings." If so, follow the instructions in the section Maps Network Settings (below).

After a few seconds a map showing your last GPS location fix will appear on the display while the GPS receiver locks onto satellite signals to determine your new location.

Press Options, highlight Find place and press select (Figure 4).

Highlight GPS position and press OK (Figure 5). When sufficient satellites have been located to calculate your position, your current location is displayed on a map onscreen (Figure 6).

You can now look up navigation instructions for routes to places from your current location, or plan routes by defining separate starting points and destinations.

Plan a route from your current location
You can quickly get navigation instructions from your present position to another location. When you have your current position displayed onscreen, press the central navigation button. This brings up a Use this place menu (Figure 7).

You can now set your present location as the starting point of your route by scrolling down to Route from. Press OK (Figure 8).You are now presented with a screen showing your current location defined as your start point in a panel marked "From" (Figure 9).

You must now select a destination for the "To" panel. Highlight the To panel and press the central navigation key. You have choice of options to help you select a destination point.

These include:

• Landmark - Locations you have previously bookmarked yourself. Could be a favourite sight, your office or your home, it's up to you what you want to add to the list .
• Recent - The 10 most recent locations you have looked up or defined by marking onscreen.
• From map - Choose a point on the onsceen map and click on it to add it to your route.
• Address - You can type a full address, partial address or postcode to search for a location.
• From guide - Choose a location in one of the downloadable guides available from Nokia.

Route to a known address
If you're looking up an address, scroll down to highlight Address. Press OK (Figure 10).

Type in details of the address you're looking up, or the postcode (Figure 11).

Press Options. Highlight Search, press Select (Figure 12). The results from the search will be listed. If there are multiple entries, scroll to highlight the appropriate entry (Figure 13). Press Select.

The From and To points of your route are now shown onscreen (Figure 14). Press Options. Scroll down to highlight Show route. Press select (Figure 15).

A set of turn-by-turn text directions are displayed in an itinerary onscreen (Figure 16). Click the central navigation button to display a map of the route onscreen (Figure 17). You can click the navigation buttons up or down to view the turn-by-turn instructions on the map.

You can start navigating to the location or see an animated simulation of the route onscreen. To get a simulation, press Options, highlight Start simulation. Press select (Figure 18).

To navigate the route with voice instructions, you need to purchase an additional Navigation upgrade from Nokia. You can purchase a licence for this - ranging from 1 week to 3 years - directly from your N95 8GB by following the onscreen instructions when prompted.

Following the procedure above, as well as looking up addresses you can select destination points from recent places you've looked up, your own favourite, self-defined Landmarks, places you've pinpointed on the map, or entries from downloaded guides.

Route to a nearby point of interest
You can also search for local points of interest and look up routes from your current location quickly.

After you've started the Nokia Maps application and your position has been located, press Options. Highlight Find place and press select (Figure 19).

Scroll down to the Nearby option (Figure 20). Press OK.

From the list of categories, scroll down to the one you require (in this example, we're choosing Sights) (Figure 21). Highlight and press select.

Scroll down to highlight the sub-category you require (in this example, Museums & Galleries) and press select (Figure 22).

Scroll down the list to highlight the location you're searching for (in this example, the British Museum). Press select (Figure 23).

Scroll down to Route to and press OK (Figure 24).

You must now select your starting point (Figure 25).

Highlight the From panel and press select. To get directions from your current position, highlight GPS position and press OK (Figure 26). Your current location will be displayed onscreen in the From panel (Figure 27).

To get navigation instructions, as above, press Options. Scroll down to highlight Show route (Figure 28). Press select.

A list of turn-by-turn text directions are displayed on an itinerary onscreen (Figure 29).

Click the central navigation button to display a map of the route onscreen (Figure 30).

As above, you can click the navigation buttons up or down to view the turn-by-turn instructions on the map, and get a simulated turn-by-turn voice navigation. If you choose the Start navigation option, you will be presented with details of how to upgrade to Nokia's voice navigation subscription service.

Planning other routes
In a similar way to above, you can plan routes from your current position to other locations.

From the start screen, once your your position has been located press Options. Scroll down to Find place and press select (Figure 31).

You can search for points of interest, addresses or locations under several headings (Figure 32):

• GPS position - Your current GPS coordinates will be calculated to give you a precise location you can use for navigating
• Address - You can search for an exact address or street by entering the appropriate details; you can search just using a postcode, if available
• Keyword search - You can search across all points of interest categories by tapping in a few letters of its name or description - such as a restaurant name, business title, tourist attraction and so on. A list of alternatives is presented for you to choose from.
• Nearby - You can search a set of category options to search for points of interest near to a location. This comprises eight main categories - Automotive, Transport, Accommodation, Eat & Drink, Shopping, Leisure, Sights and Service. Under these headings are several other sub-categories to help refine your search.
• Guides - Nokia provides a selection of city and country guides you can download, such as AA London, Berlitz Travel Guides and so on. You can purchase these and use information in these to select points of interest
• Recent - The Nokia Maps software stores 10 recently viewed locations which you can use as navigation points
• Landmark - You can add your own personal favourite locations to this list. You can bookmark anywhere you like, office, home, favourite beach spot or new-found restaurant.

Not only can you define routes to or from your current location, you can also plan routes by selecting both start and end points. You can look these up in a similar way to the examples above.

To define the start or end point, follow the procedure above to search under one of the categories above for a point of interest, address, etc.

When you've found the place where you want to start or finish, highlight it and press Options. Scroll down to Route from or Route to and press OK (Figure 33).

You can now define a Route from/to start/end point by searching under the options Landmark, Recent, From Map (selecting a location from the onscreen map), Address or From Guide.

If your start/end point isn't listed under these headings, before you define your start and end points you can search the full selection of categories and save results to Landmarks to use later.

So, for example, you can search for your required start/destination under one of the Nearby categories, and save it to your Landmarks. Subsequently, when you're choosing your Route to/from locations, you can select it from your Landmarks folder.

To search in this way, from the start page press Options. Choose Find place and press select.

Choose one of the categories (such as Nearby or Keyword search). In this example we're using Keyword search to find Edinburgh Castle (Figure 34); type in the word you're looking for and press Find.

Once you've carried out a search and selected the location you require, highlight it and press select.

Scroll down to the Save option (Figure 35) and press OK. You can edit the name of the location if required (Figure 36). Press OK when you're satisfied with the name.

You can now choose to label it for one or more category - scroll down to the appropriate ones, click those required and press OK (Figure 37).

This location is now saved to Landmarks for you to look up later.

Maps Networks Settings

If you see the message 'No Internet connection. Please check your network settings' when you start up Maps, you need to assign a network conection to the application.

• To do this, click Options, highlight Settings and click Select.
• On the Settings screen (Figure 38), highlight Network and press the central navigation select key.
• When the Network page opens, highlight Use network and press the centre selection key (Figure 39)
• Highlight the the option When needed. Press OK (Figure 40).
• Make sure the Default access point field contains the network access point (mobile or WLAN) you want to use. If not, highlight it and press select (Figure 41).
• A list of available networks will appear (both wireless WLAN networks and mobile web connections). Highlight the connection you want to use and click OK to see it in the Default access point field (Figure 42)
• Note: if you choose a WLAN connection, you should also be connected to this WLAN.
• Press Back until you get back to the start page of the application
