Make the most of the calendar
Sandra Vogel
Keep track of all those important appointments.
Got an appointment you need to make? Let your Nokia N70 remind you with its flexible built in calendar
We all have plenty to do in our busy day and some of it has to be done at specific time. The Nokia N70 has a calendar which you can use to keep track of all those important appointments.
If you want to be an advanced user then you can use the software that comes with your Nokia N70 to synchronise the phone’s calendar with Outlook on your main computer. Here, though, we are going to concentrate on setting up and using the calendar just on the phone itself.
Your Nokia N70 can show upcoming calendar entries on its main screen. This is called the ‘Active standby’ mode and another tutorial on the site shows you how to set this up.
To get to the calendar press the Nokia Menu key to the left of the 1 and 2 keys then use the navigation key to highlight Calendar and press the centre of the navigation button to select it.
To create an appointment or scheduled event
- choose Options with the left select key
- choose New Entry then choose Meeting. There are two other choices: memo and anniversary
- anniversaries only need to be entered once but the calendar will show them every year
- memos are entries that don’t need a specific time or date to be attached to them. They are handy for things like shopping lists or other general to-do style stuff
- meetings are scheduled events
On the screen that opens next move the cursor down through the different information fields and enter the information required for each one.
- Subject. The topic of your meeting. This is the information which will show on the N70’s main screen so keep it short but descriptive
- Location. Use this if it is a meeting with a specific place and you want to be reminded of it. For example it might be a work meeting in ‘Meeting Room 4’. You do not need to put anything in this field
- Start time, End time, Start date and End date. These are for information about the precise timing of your event. Use the keyboard to enter dates and times, and the navigation button to move between the different sections of the field.
- Alarm. You can set a reminder alarm if you think you are likely to need this. Press the centre of the navigation button to choose ‘On’ then in the next two fields down set the time and date of the alarm. If you have Alarm set to ‘Off’ these two fields will not appear.
- Repeat. Set whether this appointment repeats. This is very useful for things you do at regular intervals as it saves you having to create separate diary entries every time the item occurs. Press the centre of the navigation button then use the navigation button to move between the choices: Daily, Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly, Yearly
- Synchronisation. If you are synchronising your Nokia N70 with a PC you may want to press the centre of the navigation key and choose a setting here:
- Private. If you synchronise with a group calendar only you will be able to see this calendar entry
- Public. If you synchronise with a group calendar everyone will be able to see this calendar entry
- None. If you synchronise with a group calendar this calendar entry will not be synchronised. It will only be on your Nokia N70
When you are finished, choose Done with the right select key then choose Exit with the right select key.
More on calendar alarms
If you have set up an alarm with a calendar appointment when it goes off you have the following options:
- choose Silence with the right select key. The alarm sound will go off, but you will still be able to read the visual reminder of the appointment
- choose Stop with the left select key. The alarm will go off and the visual reminder of the appointment will disappear from the screen
- choose Silence with the right select key then choose Snooze with the same key. The alarm will go off, and after a couple of minutes will sound again
Viewing the calendar
There are several different options for viewing the calendar on the screen of the Nokia N70. Having opened the calendar by pressing the Nokia Menu key to the left of the 1 and 2 keys then using the navigation key to highlight Calendar and pressing its centre to select it, press the star* key.
The screen will cycle between its three views:
- week view. This shows the whole week at a glance. Busy time is indicated by a filled line. Appointment information is shown above the week grid.
- month view. This shows a full month at a time. Dates with calendar entries are marked with a small triangle in their bottom right edge. Select one to see it in day view
- day view shows all the appointments for the current day.
In each of these views the navigation key allows you to move around within and between the day, week or month you are viewing.
Useful settings
In the calendar view choose Options with the left select key then choose Settings. Now you can move through the options to make the following settings
- the tone used for calendar alarms
- the view (week, month or day) that is shown when you open the calendar
- the day that the week view starts on
- the way weeks are identified – either their number in the 52 week year, or by their date
