The Nokia E63 is a very capable messaging-orientated, Qwerty keyboard-packing smartphone, geared up to be a useful business tool but also well-equipped for your off-duty social activities.

To help you enjoy using your handset for both work and play, Nokia has enabled a dual home screen function on the E63. This allows users to set up two customised home screens, with shortcuts and favourite applications and email accounts displayed, plus separate themes and wallpapers, customised on each, for office life and personal life.

You can switch between the two easily via a shortcut icon on the home screen, enabllng you to turn on or off from work as you need to, keeping business and social lives separate.

Here we show you how to set up the home screen for the dual home screen...

Dual home screens
When you first switch on the Nokia E63, you will see a bar of six icons towards the top of the display (Figure 1). These represent shortcuts to phone applications and functions. The one on the far right, with intertwined black and white arrows is the Switch mode option.

  • To switch between business and personal home screens, scroll to highlight the Switch mode shortcut using the main navigation pad beneath the display, and press the central pad to select. You will see the look of the home screen change, and the shortcut icons will also change (Figure 2).
  • Select the Switch mode icon again and press the navigation pad, and the home screen will switch back to the original.

You can customise the two home screens so that you have all your essential business functions on one, and your favourite entertainment apps on the other - or you can mix it up to get whatever features and apps suit the way you use your phone.

Setting up home screens
The procedure to customise both Business and Personal home screens is similar. In this example we will first customise the Business mode screen.

  1. From the home screen press Menu (Figure 1).
  2. Scroll to highlight Tools (Figure 3). Press the central navigation pad to select.
  3. Scroll to highlight Modes (Figure 4). Press the central navigation pad to select.
  4. You are now presented with the home screen modes customisation options (Figure 5). To start with, choose which mode you want to customise.
  5. To switch between business and personal modes, highlight Switch mode at the top of the screen and press the central navigation pad to select. In a couple of seconds you'll be switched to the alternative home screen customisation options (Figure 6). To get back to the previous home screen mode options, highlight Switch mode again and press select.

Changing home screen applications

  1. The first customisation option allows you to change the name of the modes from 'Business' or 'Personal' to anything you like. You may find this handy if, for example, you operate two businesses. Scroll to highlight Mode name (Figure 7). Press select. You can type in whatever you like here (Figure 8). Press OK to save.
  2. To customise the applications displayed on the home screen, in the Modes menu highlight Home screen applications (Figure 9). Press select.
  3. Highlight Enabled applications (Figure 10). Press select. A list of applications enabled on your home screen is displayed (Figure 11), with enabled applications ticked.
  4. To select or deselect apps, scroll down to highlight the required application. Press the central navigation pad to select or deselect (if deselected, the tick disappears from the box). Once you have chosen the selection you want to display on this home screen, press OK (Figure 12).
  5. You can also change the bar of six shortcut icons towards the top of the display. In the Home screen applications menu, highlight Application shortcuts (Figure 13). Press select.
  6. Each of the six shortcuts can be individually selected; they are labelled Shortcut 1 to Shortcut 6 (Figure 14). Scroll to highlight the shortcut you wish to change. Press select.
  7. You are presented with a comprehensive list of dozens of applications and functions, plus bookmarked websites and services you can scroll through and choose as shortcuts (Figure 15).
  8. Highlight the one you want to use and press OK (Figure 16).
  9. You are returned to the Application shortcuts page (Figure 17). Repeat this procedure as required for the other Shortcut options you wish to change. Once finished, press Back to get to the Home screen applications menu, or press the call End button to return to your home screen with new shortcut changes implemented.

Changing home screen email notification

  1. To change onscreen Email mailbox notification, in the Home screen applications menu highlight E-mail 1 notification (Figure 18). Press select.
  2. Highlight Mailbox (Figure 19). Press select.
  3. You can now select the mailbox you want to define for your home screen (Figure 20). Highlight the required mailbox and press OK. Press Back.
  4. You can define a second email address in a similar way. Highlight E-mail 2 notification and press select (Figure 21). Follow the procedure outlined above for E-mail 1 notification.

Changing home screen themes and wallpapers
You can switch Themes for each home screen mode too.

  1. In the Modes menu screen, scroll down to highlight Theme (Figure 22). Press select.
  2. Scroll up or down the list of theme options to choose the one you want to install (Figure 23). Press OK to select it. You will immediately see the screen background on the Modes screen change (Figure 24).
  3. Similarly, you can select the background wallpaper for the home screen. Highlight Wallpaper and press select (Figure 25). You can either use the default background associated with your theme, or select an image from your image files (Figure 26). If you select image, scroll to find the image file you require (Figure 27), and press Select to save as your wallpaper.

Customising the alternative home screen
To change shortcuts, applications, themes and other elements of the other version of the home screen, simply follow the procedure outlined above for the alternative home screen mode.

As mentioned earlier, to switch between business and personal modes, in the Modes menu highlight Switch mode at the top of the screen and press the central navigation pad to select. In a couple of seconds you'll be switched to the alternative home screen customisation options (Figure 6). Follow the same procedure as for the first screen, outlined above.
