Setting up and using email on the Nokia 7310 Supernova

In addition to text messaging and MMS picture messaging, you can send and receive email on the Nokia 7310 Supernova, using your regular email accounts.

If you have a normal POP3 or IMAP4 email account, such as a web-based email account or email provided by your internet service provider, you can set up the phone to send and receive emails over the air via your mobile network. It's a handy extra to have in your phone, even if you may only occasionally want to check your email when you're not near your desktop PC.

And it's not difficult to set up. The 7310 Supernova's has an email wizard onboard to guide you through the set-up procedure, and can supply settings automatically for your email.

Once you get access to your email account up and running on the phone, and you become familiar with how it works, you can then try out some of the more advanced settings. These include setting up automatic email downloads, adjusting your email in-box configurations and so on.

But it's simple to get started...

Setting up and using your email account

1. From the standby screen, press Menu (Figure 1).
2. In the main menu, scroll to highlight Messaging (Figure 2). Press Select.
3. Scroll down to highlight E-mail (Figure 3). Press Select.
4. You will be asked if you have an email address you want to use on your phone (Figure 4). Press Yes.
5. You are asked to enter your email address. Tap in the full POP3/IMAP4 email address you wish to use (Figure 5). Press OK.
6. The phone will the ask to connect to the internet to search for settings (Figure 6). Press Yes.
7. After a few seconds wait, your settings should be activated on the phone, and a message appears onscreen (Figure 7). Press OK.
8. Another message appears asking Connect to mailbox? (Figure 8). Press Yes.
9. You are asked for your normal email account password. Tap in your password (Figure 9). Press OK.
10. You are then asked to Verify new password. Tap in your account password again (Figure 10). Press OK. Your password is saved for next time you wish to connect.
11. A message appears informing you that the phone is Synchronising mailbox (Figure 11). This may take a while, depending on how many emails you have.
12. Subject headers from your emails will be presented onscreen (Figure 12). Scroll through the list to select ones you want to read. Press Open.
13. More details of the subject header and sender appear onscreen (Figure 13). If you want to read the full email, press Retrieve.
14. You will be asked if you want to make a data connection to receive emails (Figure 14). Press Yes.
15. In a few seconds your message will be downloaded and displayed onscreen (Figure 15). You can also view images emailed to you as attachments. Press Back if you want to return to your email list.

As with regular desktop email, there are a variety of options you can choose from to manage your email including to reply, forward and delete messages. You can also save attachments, use details in messages and edit messages.

Replying to an email

1. To reply to an email, press Options. Highlight Reply and press Select (Figure 16).
2. In the new email reply, type in your message (Figure 17). Press Next.
3. To send the email reply, select the Send option onscreen and press Select (Figure 18).

Adding attachments

1. If you want to add an image or other file stored on the phone as an attachment before sending, highlight the Insert button onscreen and press Select (Figure 19).
2. Scroll to highlight the folder from which you want to add the attachment (Figure 20). Press Select.
3. Choose the required option in the folder (in this example, Open images folder) (Figure 21). Press Select.
4. Scroll through the list of images (or other files) and highlight the one you wish to send (Figure 22). Press Insert.
5. The object will be added to the email (Figure 23). Highlight the Send option onscreen and press Select (Figure 24).

To get back to previous screens, press Back until you get to the required screen.

Retrieving new emails

1. From the standby screen, press Menu (Figure 1).
2. In the main menu, scroll to highlight Messaging (Figure 2). Press Select.
3. Scroll down to your email inbox (Figure 25). Press Select.
4. You will be asked if you want to Connect to mailbox (Figure 26). Press Yes and the phone will synchronise with your remote mailbox, downloading subject headers for new emails.
5. Follow the procedure outlined above for viewing and replying to new emails.

There are a variety of email settings you can adjust to tailor your email to how you want it. These include setting the phone to automatically retrieve new emails at designated time intervals. These can be found under the Menu settings option in the Messaging menu.

Sending new emails

1. in the Messaging menu, highlight Create message (Figure 27). Press Select.
2. Scroll down to highlight E-mail message (Figure 28). Press Select.
3. Tap in the email address, subject and message by scrolling down to the appropriate panels.
4. As above, when the message is completed and any attachments added, highlight the Send box and press Select (Figure 29).
