How to set up Bluetooth on the Nokia 6288

Unlike SMS or MMS, Bluetooth is completely free to use and a great way to swap files with friends or colleagues

This illustrated guide shows you how to set up Bluetooth wireless connections on the Nokia 6288

The Nokia 6288 is equipped with Bluetooth technology, a wireless system that lets you send files, images and video clips to and from similarly equipped phones, PCs and other devices like hands-free headsets and gaming devices. Unlike SMS or MMS, Bluetooth is completely free to use and a great way to swap files with friends or colleagues.

Switching on Bluetooth

Bluetooth technology lets you connect your Nokia 6288 to your PC, Mac or other Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones to transfer files, images and video clips between the two.

Before sending files via Bluetooth, it’s a good idea to give your phone a unique name. All Nokia 6288s will have the default name ‘Nokia 6288’, which will be visible to all Bluetooth-enabled phones in the area. To ensure files intended for you don’t get sent to other mobiles, change this by following these steps:

  • From the standby screen, click Menu to view the main menu.
  • Select Settings and click Select.
  • Scroll down to highlight Connectivity and click Select.
  • Highlight Bluetooth and click Select.
  • Scroll up to highlight Bluetooth settings and click Select.
  • Scroll down to highlight My phone’s name and click Select.
  • Edit the name of your phone as you prefer – add your name or initials, for instance.
  • Click OK. The confirmation message ‘Name saved’ will appear.

To make sure your phone is visible to other phones and PCs, after saving the name of your phone, scroll to My phone’s visibility, and if Hidden is selected, click Select. Scroll up to highlight Shown to all and click Select. The confirmation message ‘Visible to all searching devices’ will appear.

How to send a file via Bluetooth

To send a file – for instance an image, video clip, theme or ringtone – via Bluetooth, first locate and highlight the file in the Gallery. Follow these steps:

  • Click Options (the left selection key) and in the menu, highlight Send.
  • Click Select and highlight Via Bluetooth. Click Select again and your phone will search for compatible Bluetooth devices. The Bluetooth icon at the top of the screen will flash while it searches.
  • When the search is complete, a list of devices will appear on screen. Select the name of the destination phone or PC and click Select. The message ‘Connecting to…’ and the device name will appear.
  • A dialog box on the destination device will ask you to accept decline the incoming file. Click Accept and the transfer will commence.

How to receive a file via Bluetooth

To receive a file from another device, first make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your Nokia 6288. To enable Bluetooth:

  • From the standby screen, click Menu to view the main menu.
  • Select Settings and click Select.
  • Scroll down to highlight Connectivity and click Select.
  • Highlight Bluetooth and click Select.
  • Highlight Bluetooth. If Off is selected under Bluetooth, click Select and scroll up to highlight On. Click Select and you’ll see the confirmation message ‘Bluetooth switched on’.
  • Click the red End key to return to the standby screen. The Bluetooth icon should now appear at the top of the screen.

When a connected device sends a file, the message 'Receive data from?' and the name of the originating device will appear on your mobile. Click the middle selection key to accept or press the right selection key to reject the file. You have around 30 seconds to accept or reject.

If you accept, the standard message alert tone will play and notification of an image or file received will appear on your phone. Select Show to view and you’ll be taken to the destination folder in your Gallery.
