Everything from news headlines, weather forecasts and sports news to TV listings and radio schedules. Programme previews feature wallpapers, video downloads and audio clips which make great ringtones, and even quizzes and games for entertainment on the move. Make this your homepage.

Google – www.google.co.uk
The web’s favourite search engine – now on your mobile phone. Ideal for settling arguments, winning pub quizzes or just checking spelling on the move. Google mobile lets you search for full HTML pages or restrict your search to mobile web pages, and delivers the findings in a data-light, image-free format.

Flickr – m.flickr.com
Photo-sharing goes mobile with Flickr’s WAP site. Users can search for images on any topic, while subscribers can upload images from their mobile image libraries, view contacts’ photos and search their own libraries for images and comments.

Zedge Mobile – mobile.zedge.net
Customise your phone on the go with the collection of free downloads at Zedge.net’s new mobile portal. Find free ringtones, wallpaper, themes and video clips, all tailored to your phone model, by searching for keywords or browsing the galleries. Regular Zedge users can even communicate with other members using the mobile portal.

National Rail - wap.nationalrail.co.uk
Is your train running late and you want to check the next connection, or do you just want to see if there’s time for one last pint? The National Rail Enquiries’ mobile site is about as pretty as a buffet car sandwich, but as fast and efficient as a Japanese Bullet train. Check imminent departures and arrivals or search the national train timetables for the next seven days. It even tells you where to change trains.

Travel news and route planner for Londoners. Simply enter the starting location and destination (street name or postcode will do) and the route planner will tell you the quickest way to get there, be it by tube, bus, boat or Shanks’s pony. Constantly updated to keep you aware of delays, signal failure and the wrong type of snow.

Now we’re not encouraging cheating, but if the answer’s on the tip of your tongue, why not coax it out with a bit of online research? Pub Quiz Help is an eclectic selection of lists and records, containing everything from the phonetic alphabet for N to the birthstone for May, via all seven dwarves and that old favourite, US state capitals. Find your favourite restaurant at the touch of a button. The Mobile Food Guide lets you search for quality eateries throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. Drill down (somewhat laboriously) through Country, Region and County and Town to see a list of recommended restaurants in your locality, or alternatively search for a town or restaurant name and the MFG will serve up all its matching diners. Every listing features the restaurant’s location, a short but honest review and one-click dialling (via 10p/min numbers) to make a reservation. Some listings also offer sample menus and wine lists and photos, and all let you submit your own reviews.

In the absence of a mobile version of the omniscient IMDB, Films and TV does an admirable job as a searchable database of films, directors, actors and actresses. It doesn’t have the depth of the IMDB, but does have a synopsis and cast list for each film, and user ratings in case you’re in the cinema queue and torn between two movies. Oddly for a site called Films and TV, no TV shows are included in the database.
