Here are 10 mobile websites for you to bookmark and enjoy

So you’ve got an Internet-enabled phone, but you don’t visit any sites apart from your network provider’s home page. And that may cover all your mobile needs, but what if you want to spread your web wings? We unearth 10 of mobile websites to bookmark today

BBC.co.uk – www.bbc.co.uk
Everything from news headlines, weather forecasts and sports news to TV listings and radio schedules. Programme previews feature wallpapers, video downloads and audio clips which make great ringtones, and even quizzes and games for entertainment on the move. Make this your homepage.

Google – www.google.co.uk
The web’s favourite search engine – now on your mobile phone. Ideal for settling arguments, winning pub quizzes or just checking spelling on the move. Google mobile lets you search for full HTML pages or restrict your search to mobile web pages, and delivers the findings in a data-light, image-free format.

Flickr – m.flickr.com
Photo-sharing goes mobile with Flickr’s WAP site. Users can search for images on any topic, while subscribers can upload images from their mobile image libraries, view contacts’ photos and search their own libraries for images and comments.
Read our guide to using Flickr Mobile

Zedge Mobile – mobile.zedge.net
Customise your phone on the go with the collection of free downloads at Zedge.net’s new mobile portal. Find free ringtones, wallpaper, themes and video clips, all tailored to your phone model, by searching for keywords or browsing the galleries. Regular Zedge users can even communicate with other members using the mobile portal.

National Rail - wap.nationalrail.co.uk
Is your train running late and you want to check the next connection, or do you just want to see if there’s time for one last pint? The National Rail Enquiries’ mobile site is about as pretty as a buffet car sandwich, but as fast and efficient as a Japanese Bullet train. Check imminent departures and arrivals or search the national train timetables for the next seven days. It even tells you where to change trains.

Transport for London - wap.tfl.gov.uk
Travel news and route planner for Londoners. Simply enter the starting location and destination (street name or postcode will do) and the route planner will tell you the quickest way to get there, be it by tube, bus, boat or Shanks’s pony. Constantly updated to keep you aware of delays, signal failure and the wrong type of snow.

Pub Quiz Help - wap.pubquizhelp.com
Now we’re not encouraging cheating, but if the answer’s on the tip of your tongue, why not coax it out with a bit of online research? Pub Quiz Help is an eclectic selection of lists and records, containing everything from the phonetic alphabet for N to the birthstone for May, via all seven dwarves and that old favourite, US state capitals. Hasn’t been updated in a while, but still a great reference resource. For cheats.

Mobile Food Guide -
www.themobilefoodguide.com/mobile
Find your favourite restaurant at the touch of a button. The Mobile Food Guide lets you search for quality eateries throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. Drill down (somewhat laboriously) through Country, Region and County and Town to see a list of recommended restaurants in your locality, or alternatively search for a town or restaurant name and the MFG will serve up all its matching diners. Every listing features the restaurant’s location, a short but honest review and one-click dialling (via 10p/min numbers) to make a reservation. Some listings also offer sample menus and wine lists and photos, and all let you submit your own reviews.

Films and TV - www.filmsandtv.com/wml
In the absence of a mobile version of the omniscient IMDB, Films and TV does an admirable job as a searchable database of films, directors, actors and actresses. It doesn’t have the depth of the IMDB, but does have a synopsis and cast list for each film, and user ratings in case you’re in the cinema queue and torn between two movies. Oddly for a site called Films and TV, no TV shows are included in the database.

Ents24 What’s On Guide - www.ents24.com
What’s on in your area this week? Plan your nights out with Ents24.com, a nationwide online entertainment guide that offers listings of films, gigs, clubs, comedy and the latest in theatre and the arts. Each event listing includes venue details, event information and direct-dial link to the box office.

Take a look at our Internet Settings chart here

When this is set up correctly, you can load up your browser and explore the mobile web.

Browsing basics
To open the Nokia 6233’s mobile browser, from the standby mode, click Menu to open the main menu and highlight Web (the globe icon). Click Select.

You have four browsing options on the next screen:
Home: Opens the browser at the homepage specified in your web configuration.
Bookmarks: Opens a list of bookmarks set by your network provider.
Last web address: Opens the browser at the last page it visited.
Go to address: Opens a dialog box for you to enter the address of the site or page you want to visit.

Highlight the option you want and click Select. If you selected Go to address, enter the address of the site into the space provided using the keypad and click OK.

When the page opens in your browser, use the navigation keys to scroll round the page. Pages will scroll up and down a couple of lines each time you press a key, unless there are links on a page, where scrolling up or down will highlight a link on the next line. Where there are several links laid out horizontally on one line, you can move the highlight from one to the other using the left and right navigation keys.

If you find a link you want to open, highlight it and click Select.

Where you have to enter text within a form on a page, highlight the field so that its border looks thicker and simply enter the details via the keypad. You'll need to click OK when you've finished to return to navigation mode.

Check out our Internet Settings page here

Send photos straight from your mobile phone to the world's biggest photo-sharing site - no PC required

It’s one of the world’s most popular websites and millions of people upload their latest photos to it every day. With the power of mobile phone cameras increasing with every new release, flickr.com has gone mobile.

Using Flickr Mobile (m.flickr.com) there’s no need to download your photos from phone to PC before putting them online, just upload them to your existing online albums straight from your mobile phone.

Non-users can search through Flickr’s huge image bank without having to sign in, and can search by the text that accompanies a photo or by the keyword-style tags that the uploader has applied. Search results are listed in order of relevance, but can also be viewed with the most recent or even the most interesting – calculated according to numbers of views, notes and comments - first.

But of course it’s by registering at www.flickr.com that you get the real benefits of the site.

Registered users will be familiar with the options offered by Flickr Mobile. Once you’ve logged in (and unfortunately this can be difficult on the Nokia 6233, see Login problems), you can browse through your own photos, view the latest images uploaded by your contacts and leave comments on any photo on the site.

Best of all, you can upload photos taken on your mobile’s camera straight to Flickr, so photos you take on holiday or on nights out could be online within seconds. The process is easy, although the maximum image size is a lowly 300kb, so you won’t be able to use the Nokia 6233’s 2-megapixel setting to its full potential, and while you’ll be able to use images taken at the 1280x960 resolution, you’ll have to drop image quality to ‘Normal’ to ensure your photos stay below the 300kb limit.

Flickr has made a great transition to the mobile web, and while the service is naturally limited compared to the full version – you can’t rotate, order or add tags to photos, for instance - it meets the needs of the ‘fun photographer’ perfectly, and is ideal for sharing holiday snaps and party photos when you’re not within downloading distance of a PC.

How to upload an image and leave comments using Flickr Mobile

Found your ideal mobile web site? Save, organise and use bookmarks on your Nokia 6233 just as you would on your PC

Entering your favourite mobile web addresses using a mobile phone keypad can be a tedious process, but just like on your PC browser, the Nokia 6233's mobile web browser lets you save the URLs as bookmarks.

Your mobile network provider has probably added some bookmarks of its own services for you, but you can easily add your own bookmarks, remove others and re-order the bookmark screen.

To add a bookmark, open the Bookmarks screen from the Web menu, click Options (the left selection key) and scroll up to New bookmark. Click Select, enter the address of the web page you want to bookmark and click OK. Then enter the title of the bookmark as you want it to appear on your Bookmarks screen, click OK and the new bookmark will be added alphabetically to the bookmarks list.

Alternatively, if you want to bookmark a page you’re currently browsing, click Options in the browser, highlight Add bookmark and click Select. The new bookmark will be added alphabetically to your Bookmarks screen, but because this method doesn’t let you add your own title, it will be listed under the title set by the site designers.

This title may not be instantly recognisable to you or specific enough for your needs. Follow the instructions below to add your own title to your new bookmark:

In the Bookmarks screen, highlight the bookmark and click Options.

Scroll down to Edit and click Select.

The saved address will be displayed. Click OK.

The pre-set title will be displayed. Press Clear to delete this and type your own title in its place. Click OK, the change will be confirmed and you’ll be returned to the Bookmarks screen. Your new bookmark will be re-ordered alphabetically by title.

Using bookmarks
You can open bookmarks via their shortcuts in your Bookmarks screen, or from within an active browser session.

For ease of access, you can add bookmarks to your selection keys – read our guide to changing navigation key shortcuts to see how this is done.

Sorting bookmarks
New bookmarks are automatically added to the Bookmarks screen in alphabetical order. You can’t change the order of the bookmarks but you can organise them by adding folders to the Bookmarks screen and organising your bookmarks into those folders.

To add a folder:

From the Bookmarks screen, click Options and highlight Add folder. Click Select.

Enter the name of the new folder and click OK. The message ‘Folder saved’ will appear.

Your new folder will be highlighted on the Bookmarks screen, and positioned above any individual bookmarks. If you have more than one folder, they will be listed in alphabetical order.

To move a bookmark into a folder:

On the Bookmarks screen, highlight the bookmark you want to add to a folder.

Click Options, highlight Move and click Select.

The top-level Bookmarks folder will appear. Highlight this and click Options and Open folder.

A list of available folders will appear. Highlight the destination folder and click Move to.

The bookmark will be moved into the chosen folder.

To move a bookmark from a custom folder into the main Bookmarks folder, simply highlight the top-level Bookmarks folder during the Move process and click Move to.

Flickr's Mobile site lets you upload images straight from your Nokia 6233 and leave comments for others. Here's how it's done

Uploading an image

Log into m.flickr.com, and from the main menu, highlight option 4, Upload a photo. Click Select and highlight the field under ‘Choose a photo:’. Click Select and you’ll be taken to your phone’s Gallery. Locate the image you want to upload, highlight it and click Select so that the image’s name appears in the field.

Scroll down to highlight the UPLOAD button and click Select. Your image will be loaded to the Flickr server. Now you have the option to add a title and description for the photo. Highlight the Title or Description field, click Edit and enter your text, clicking OK to confirm.

Finally, you can apply privacy settings to make the new photo public or private. Use the navigation keys and Select to choose between Private (no-one can view the photo), Show to friends or Show to family (only contacts classified as Friends or Family can view it) or Public (everyone can view your photo). When you’ve chosen a privacy setting, highlight SAVE and click Select and you should receive a message telling you your photo has been uploaded.

Leaving a comment

To add a comment to any photo on Flickr Mobile, highlight the photo’s thumbnail in the search results so that a blue border appears. Click Select. Scroll down to highlight the ‘Add a comment:’ field and click Edit. Add your comment into the page and click OK to confirm. Your new comment will now appear underneath the photo.

Login problems

For such an otherwise easy-to-use site, it’s frustrating that the login process isn’t always very smooth. Enter the URL m.flickr.com into your mobile browser (Menu > Web > Go to address) and click OK to load the page. When it loads, highlight Sign in and click Select to be presented with the Yahoo login screen (you must have a Yahoo ID, old Flickr-only IDs won’t work on the mobile site).

You’ll usually see the personalised Flickr Mobile homepage with its full menu, but occasionally the generic Welcome page, featuring the Sign in link, will just reload. If it does reload, click Options, highlight Other options and press Select. Highlight Clear the cache and click Select. You’ll be taken back to the Welcome page. Click Options again, highlight Reload and click Select. Click OK to approve any redirects, and your personal homepage will load.
