How to send Sat Nav maps to other mobiles with the Nokia 6110

Wiith the Nokia 6110 Navigator you can help other people find you by sending detailed Sat Nav maps to their mobile phone

Among its many features, the Nokia 6110 Navigator has a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver built in, and is supplied with satellite navigation software. Users can find their own location on an onscreen map, search for directions to other locations or points of interest and get step-by-step onscreen and voice instructions to get there.

The sophisticated Sat Nav software that comes with the Nokia 6110 Navigator, which is supplied by Sat Nav specialist Route 66, offers numerous options for searching for locations and getting directions. You can search for an address by tapping in just a few letters of the address or postcode; you can scroll through various categories of locations - from entertainment venues or banks to shops or historical locations - and even look up routes to contact addresses straight from your phone's contacts.

Nokia 6110 users can use its Sat Nav system either in a vehicle or in pedestrian mode, giving you step-by-step navigation in a convenient pocket-sized, mobile package.

As well as planning your own route, the Nokia 6110 Navigator's mobile phone functionality also enables users to share maps and step-by-step routes with other mobile phone users.

Some maps can be sent by simply capturing a map displayed on the phone's screen with a few button presses. Users can then choose an option to send it to another mobile phone via a multimedia MMS message, email or beam it to someone nearby via Bluetooth. Alternatively, users can send step-by-step route details by MMS, text message or email.

This facility could prove very useful. You could send a friend instructions on how to get to a meeting place, inform someone of your exact location if you're in an unfamiliar town, or send a map to help out a friend who's lost. There are numerous possibilities. And it's easy to do...

Activating Sat Nav
Activate your Nokia 6110 Navigator's GPS satellite navigation application by pressing the Navigator button at the bottom of the closed phone, just below the main navigation pad; its marked with a compass-shaped icon (Figure 1). Alternatively, you can activate this function via the main menu.

Your 6110 will take a few seconds to load the software (Figure 2). The screen will display the earth, and then swiftly home in to your location (or your last location when the GPS receiver was on) (Figure 3).

The GPS receiver will now identify your exact location. This could take under a minute or several minutes, depending on how quickly the GPS receiver can lock onto sufficient satellites to identify accurately your position. In built up cities or towns, it could take longer than in open country.

Once your position has been found, a map of your current location will be displayed onscreen (Figure 4). You can choose to send this map to other mobiles via MMS, email it or send it via Bluetooth. You can zoom in or out on the map to get a suitable overview of your location by pressing the * or # key on the phone's keypad.

How to send a map with your current location
To send the onscreen map, first press the Options softkey (Figure 4).

Scroll down the list to the Send option and select (Figure 5). Two options appear in a submenu - Map as image or GPS position. Highlight Map as image and select (Figure 6).

Now choose how you want to send the map. In this case, we're sending via Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), so highlight Via multimedia and press select (Figure 7). You are now presented with a standard MMS message, with the map attached as an image (Figure 8).

Like a standard MMS message, you can add text, other images, sounds or video (you can select Options to see what's available). But in this instance, we're sending simply sending the map, so highlight the To line at the top of the screen. You can either tap in a number here or choose a contact from your phonebook.

To select a contact, press the central select button on the control pad. Your contact list will appear. Highlight the contact you want to send the map to and select OK (Figure 9). The contact will now be attached to your message (Figure 10).

Now press the Options softkey, choose Send and press select (Figure 11). The map has now been sent.

Sending a map of a route from your current location
You can also send a map with directions from your current location to another destination. This could be sent to a friend to help them find their way to you. In this example, we're sending a route showing the way from our location - a music venue - to a local railway station.

Open the satellite navigation application by pressing the Navigator button as described above (Figure 1).

Wait for a map showing your location to appear onscreen (Figure 12). Press the Options softkey and select Search (Figure 13).

You can now choose one of several ways to search for a location. You can choose to search by address, nearby points of interest, historical points of interest, your own predefined landmarks or an address from your list of contacts in the phone. You can also use the Free text option to search for a location by typing bits of a name of address.

Highlight Free text and press select (Figure 14). Type in the name of the location, or part of the name, and press select (Figure 15). You will be presented with various options listed onscreen. Select the location you want to be mapped and select (Figure 16).

Several options appear onscreen. Highlight Navigate to and press select (Figure 17).

The Sat Nav system calculates the route you need to take. To get the route displayed fully on the screen, press Options, then highlight Zoom and select (Figure 18). From the pop up menu, scroll down to to entire route and press select (Figure 19). The route will be displayed onscreen (Figure 20).

To send this map to someone as an MMS, select Options, then scroll down to Send (Figure 21) and press select. Highlight Map as image and select (Figure 22). Choose the Via multimedia option and press select (Figure 23).

Your Nokia 6110 will create an MMS message with the map included (Figure 24). You can add extra elements (as described above) or simply send the message by selecting a contact (Figure 25) or typing in a number.

Once you have selected the recipient for the message, select Options and then press Send (Figure 26). The message with the map will now be sent.
