Music is the central feature of the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic, with cracking built in tune player software, and an excellent array of in-box music features.
As well as its easy to use music player gadgetry though, the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic has another very entertaining extra inside - an FM radio.
It's simple to set up and use, enabling you to tune into your favourite stations at the touch of a button. So as well as playing all the tracks you've loaded on to the phone, you can check out new music, follow live sports, catch up with news or listen in to chat shows.
You'll need to plug in a headset or earphones to act as the antenna for the radio, but once you've tuned in, you can listen either through the headset or via the phone's loudspeaker.
A number of radio stations can be stored, and you can automatically search for stations, scan through them until you find the one your after, or input the frequency directly if you know what it is. You can also tap in the name of stations you've stored, while the phone also supports RDS (Radio Data System), which automatically displays information from the tuned in station.
Using the radio is simple. First make sure the headset is plugged in.
Setting up the FM radio
- From the standby screen, scroll down to highlight Radio. Press Select (Figure 1).
- You will be asked if you want the phone to Search automatically for all available stations (Figure 2). Press Yes.
- The phone will start automatically tuning in across the frequency range and storing stations (Figure 3).
- The stations will be listed numerically in frequency order (Figure 4). You can now rename stations or change the order in which they're listed (see below).
- To simply get to the radio without making changes, press Back.
In the radio function, the central navigation D-pad or side music player controls can be used to change channels (Figure 5).
The up/down controls or the forward/rewind music controls can be used to change stored stations, while the D-pad's left/right controls can be used to go forward or back through frequencies in 0.05MHz steps. The central navigation select button or music player play/pause button can be used to turn mute off or on too. You can also use the phone's numberpad to select the stations by their stored numbers.
You can also play the radio in the background while using other functions. Simply press the Back button several times, and you'll go back through the menus until you reach the standby screen. Details of the station you're listening to will be displayed on the screen (Figure 6).
- By scrolling down the screen to highlight the radio, you can change stations, by using the navigation D-pad to scroll left or right (Figure 7).
- You can get straight back to the radio interface by pressing Select.
- You can switch off the radio at any time with a long press of the Call End button.
Adjusting settings
There are a number of options you can use for saving stations, renaming channels, setting new frequencies, searching all stations (useful if you're moving around different areas and want to get stations tuned in locally), switching RDS on or off, and turning on the loudspeaker option.
- From the Radio screen, press Options to see the list of radio options you can adjust (Figure 8).
Renaming stations
- If you want to rename stations, in the Radio Options sub-menu, scroll down to highlight Stations (Figure 9). Press Select.
- Scroll down to highlight the station you want to rename (Figure 10). Press Options.
- Scroll down to highlight Rename (Figure 11). Press Select.
- Type in the new name you want to use (Figure 12). When you've finished, press OK.
- The station's new name will now be displayed on your list of stations (Figure 13).
Swapping station order
- In the Radio Options menu, scroll down to highlight Stations (Figure 9). Press Select.
- The list of stations appears (Figure 13). Press Options.
- Scroll down to Organise (Figure 14). Press Select.

- When you're finished moving stations around, press Done (Figure 17).
- You are asked if you want to save changes (Figure 18). Press Yes. Your station position has now been reordered.
