Using email on the Nokia 5300

Sandra Vogel

When you have finished setting up your Nokia 5300 Xpress Music for email you are ready to start sending and receiving emails

SMS is good for quick communications but sometimes only email will do. The good news is that you can use the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music for mobile email. If you’ve read our tutorial on setting up mobile email, now is the time to try it out.

Create an email
On the main screen of the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music tap the middle Selection key in the centre of the navigation button to choose Menu, then choose Messaging.

Next use the navigation key to scroll down to where it says E-mail and select this by pressing the middle Selection key.

The message ‘Opening application’ appears on screen. After a short wait you can choose Write new email by highlighting it with the navigation button then pressing the middle Selection key. The message ‘Preparing message’ will appear on screen and then you are ready to start writing your email.

In the ‘To’ field type the email address you are sending to. If the person is in your contact book already then choose Search by pressing the middle Selection key and then find them in your Contacts list. Select the right person by pressing the middle Selection key.

Next go to the ‘Subject’ field and enter a subject for your message. Then go to the ‘Message text’ field and enter the main body of your message.
Finally choose Send by pressing the middle Selection key, and decide whether to ‘Send now’ or ‘Send later’. If you chose the latter the message will go into your Outbox ready to be sent when you next check email.

Collecting email
When you are ready to check for new email open the email application as above and then choose Check new e-mail. The phone will go online and give you a ‘Connecting to server’ message. It will pick up any waiting email and then disconnect. Your inbox will show a number by the word ‘New’ if any new email has been received.

Send and receive at the same time
If you want to send and receive emails at the same time, choose Options then choose Send/check e-mail.

Spam
Your Nokia 5300 Xpress Music has a spam filter that will put messages from identified senders straight into a Junk folder. If you get a message from someone you want to identify as a spammer when you are reading their email choose Options with the left select key then choose Blacklist sender.

To refine the spam settings make sure you have opened the E-mail software then choose Options with the left select key and choose Spam filter. Now you can decide whether to automatically delete spam messages rather than save them in the Junk folder.

Managing memory
To check how much memory is being taken up with messages choose Options with the left select key then choose Storage statistics. You’ll see how much of the available space in each email folder is used up. To free up more space you need to delete messages individually. You can mark several messages and then delete them all at once.
