Nokia Play To demoed on Windows 8 slate and Lumia 900
Nokia demos its Play To application running behind a Lumia 900 and a Windows 8-powered tablet
A video showcasing just what’s possible with Nokia’s new Play To application has appeared in a demo online.
The video in question shows Play To working across a Nokia Lumia 900 and a Windows 8 tablet. Like Apple’s AirPlay and Android Beam, Play To lets you send media – pictures, videos and music – from a mobile device to other Windows 8-based products and DLNA-connected devices including HDTVs.
How the app works seems relatively straightforward. Once your devices are connected to the same wireless network, you pair them, and this allows you to start sending media from one to the other wirelessly.
While this is hardly anything new, both Apple and Google have been all over this type of stuff for years, it’s still one of our first real glimpses of how Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices will interact. It’s also very similar to how we envision Microsoft’s SmartGlass technology working.
How these two services will fit together is unknown at present as not much is known about Smart Glass. One potential USP that Play To could have over Smart Glass is that it will pair with DLNA-enabled devices – something Smart Glass is not designed to do (for now, at least).
