Motorola NYC event will clash with Nokia’s big Windows Phone 8 reveal
Ahead of the iPhone 5 launch, Motorola and Nokia will stage two separate events in NYC that will see the companies launch their next-generation Android and Windows Phone-powered devices
September is shaping up to be a big month for releases. Not only do we have the iPhone 5 launch but also two separate events on September 5 that will see Nokia and Motorola unveil their new flagship handsets.
Motorola is expected to launch two handsets: the Razr HD and the Razr Maxx HD, while Nokia will introduce the world’s first Windows Phone 8-powered devices. The latter scenario is likely to attract more attention, however, being the first real outing for Microsoft’s vastly overhauled Windows Phone 8 platform.
Motorola – clearly aware of the clash – has declared that its launch will be ‘the day’s main event.’ That sounds like fighting talk to us – and it’ll need a seriously strong device to back it up. Windows Phone 8, after all, is a pretty big deal.
What we know so far about the Razr HD and the Razr Maxx HD is that they’ll feature Qualcomm’s S4 Snapdragon processor, which should deliver some rather hefty performance improvements, and enhanced 1280x720-pixel HD displays.
Whether Motorola will change the design of the handsets remains to be seen. Personally we’d like to see some innovation in this department – the Razr did not age well, despite being a rather attractive when first launched.
Going on Motorola’s current track record we’d expect minimal changes to the overall design of the phones and Android Ice Cream Sandwich on operating system duties, although Motorola could surprise everybody and launch a phone with the latest version of Google’s mobile platform.
Know Your Cell – our US sister site – will be in attendance at the Nokia event in New York, bringing you all the Windows Phone 8 action as it happens. So stay turned for that.
