Top iPhone games for Halloween
Check out these iPhone games for thrills and scares galore - it is Halloween after all
Published on Oct 28, 2009
It's Halloween this weekend, so we couldn't resist taking a look at some of the creepiest, bloodiest games we've seen on the App Store so far. Some are scary, some are just downright silly with their over-the-top action, but either way, we've gotten together some games you shouldn't be without at this - festive - time.
We've stayed away from cheesy re-skins of casual games. Instead, these are the real deal - games that were horror themed from the off.
Hysteria Project
By Bulkypix
Hysteria Project wasn’t released anywhere near Halloween, but it’s certainly one of the creepiest iPhone games we’ve played. It’s essentially an interactive movie where you have to choose the actions of the main character as he flees from an axe-wielding psycho killer.
So, while most of the game takes place through video clips, there’s bags of atmosphere to keep your hands clammy and your pulse racing as you play. It’s not all watching and waiting though. There are also quick time events that require you to tap away at certain places on the screen at just the right moment. You might be running through dense undergrowth, for example.
Hysteria Project is available now for £1.19.
Darkest Fear
By Rovio
Darkest Fear is a game that tells you that, yes, there are creepy things lurking in dark corners and that, yes again, you should be pretty afraid of them. You are Thomas Warden – after a mysterious phone call from your wife, you head on down to the abandoned hospital where they are trapped.
This is as much a puzzle game as a horror title, tasking you with filling each room with light using carefully placed mirrors in order to keep the nasties at bay. The Darkest Fear series began its life on mobiles a good few years ago, and there are now three games in total, although only one’s made it to the App Store as yet.
You can check out Darkest Fear for £2.39, or try the lite version for free.
Alive 4-Ever
By Meridian
There’s nothing to bring Halloween to life like a truckload of death, preferably accompanied by a barrel or two of blood ‘n guts. Alive 4-Ever supplies the whole lot, with great gameplay to boot too.
You control just the one main character, and have to take on a whole army of undead with your bare hands – oh and a fearsome arsenal of weapons too, of course. You do this using two analogue stick-style controllers, the left used to move your character and the right taking care of aiming. To give the game a bit of depth, you get to upgrade your character’s skills between levels.
A shooter that matches brawn with a bit of brain, Alive 4-Ever is definitely one to check out this Halloween.
iDracula
By Chillingo
iDracula is Alive 4-Ever’s hyperactive younger sibling. Instead of giving you a whole zombiepocalyse’s worth of levels to slog through, each play through is its own entity. Yep, you’re going to die at some point – it’s how long you last and how much blood you manage to spill that counts.
Like Alive 4-Ever, iDracula uses a dual stick control scheme, letting you run and gun to your heart’s content. Kills gain you experience points, and as you earn more you’ll level up. Levelling up wins to extra abilities and boosts, upping your undead killing power.
One of our early favourites from this year, iDracula can be yours for just 59p.
