Revolution Software will bring classic 1994 adventure game Beneath a Steel Sky to the iPhone.
It follows in the footsteps of Flight of the Amazon Queen and The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, two other classic 90s adventures that have touched down on the App Store, although only the latter left much of a footprint.
Beneath a Steel Sky is set in a dystopian future that should seem familiar to any who have watched Blade Runner. Like the Secret of Monkey Island, it’s a traditional point and click game. The game features artwork by comic book artist David Gibbons and has actually been available to download for free for some time from Revolution itself.
However, this new Remastered version has been re-worked substantially, so we don’t expect it’ll be a completely free download when it arrives on the App Store – although in an interview with videogamer.com, Revolution Software’s Charles Cecil suggested that the PC version of this new release may be available as a free download.
The intro and outro movies for the game have been re-done and the game’s audio has be re-sampled, presumably using the far more effective compression techniques than were available at the game’s original release.
There’s also a new interface that’ll give you hints if you’re stuck when you place your finger over significant objects. However, the game’s otherwise going to stay the same as it always was.
Beneath a Steel Sky is due for release in September. Here’s hoping its success will encourage Revolution Software to bring their other adventure games, such as Broken Sword, to the iPhone
