Payback lite pips GTA to the iPhone post
Andrew Williams
Despite the rumours, there's still no sign of Grand Theft Auto on iPhone. Payback is currently the next best thing, and now you can play it for free

Although several big publishers have invested in developing for the iPhone, Rockstar isn't one of them at this point. That means no Grand Theft Auto on iPhone- or at least not any time soon.
In Payback you play as a free-wheeling criminal who has to undertake missions for gang bosses in order to pay back your debt to them. In each level, you have to earn enough money to appease them. This'll mean running around, stealing cars and offing other criminals that get in the bosses' way.
The upcoming Car Jack City promises to be another contender for the 'not quite GTA but close' crown, but at the moment, Payback is the only game in the, erm, game. Although it hasn't been universally praised, you can now play it for free thanks to Payback Lite, which has just been released
This demo includes the first few missions and will give you enough of a taste to tell whether you'll want to spend £2.99 on the full version. It's a full 3D game and, although it doesn't have the polish of a major publisher title, it's worth checking out if you're intrigued by the idea of an open world sandbox game on your iPhone.
