Apple app store to offer 20USD downloads?

Rumours suggest that the iTunes app store will be announcing 20USD dollar game downloads in the next 6 months

Published on Feb 4, 2009

Apple may soon be introducing a premium-priced game section to its iTunes app store with titles apparently set to retail at around $20 dollars.

According to information given to pocketgamer.biz by an anonymous source, the premium Apple app store has been in discussion for quite some time but may now be readying for launch in the near future.

Apple's policy of not commenting on rumours has remained steadfast but the notion in itself seems to go against comments published only yesterday by Greg Joswiak the vice president of marketing for iPhone in which he said current iPhone game prices were in "the sweet spot" with most coming in around $5-$10 dollars.

If the rumours are to be believed the service, at least initially, will be reserved for the larger publishing houses and developers rather than the wealth of independent developers that have found a happy and profitable home in the iTunes store.

Whether or not this rumour is true is yet to be seen, but we wouldn't be surprised to see a premium store section pop up sometime pretty soon. If it doesn't happen soon, or at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June then we'd definitely expect to see it by the time the next iPhone launches, whenever that may be.
