Reset Generation review
The cut scenes are jaw-droppingly good using a cartoon-like style reminiscent of Japanese anime
This colourful N-Gage title pays tribute to the history of video games but it fiercely addictive in its own right
Published on Sep 3, 2009
The aim of Reset Generation isn't clear at first, as the tutorial gives little advice on how to play. Instead the focus is placed on the storylines, which become distracting and confusing.
After a few plays we realised the object is to lay Tetris-like blocks down in an arena to build roads between your castle and the enemy's. Five or more in a row of these blocks creates a combo, which then makes that path indestructible and gives you bonus points.
Once you build up enough bonus points, your character can perform their unique special attack move against the opponent. Simply follow your path to the enemy castle, steal their princess (all's fair in love and war) and take her back to your own castle to win the game. Along the way different pick-ups appear, allowing you to bomb, shoot and generally outsmart the opposition.
It turns out, on reading the press kit, that Reset Generation is an homage to videogames past and present. Rescuing the princess from the castle, plumbers, hedgehogs - the Tetris-shaped paving stones? Even the title, Reset Generation. It all falls into place now.
The graphics - 2D, though colourful and sharp - are fairly simple during game play, but but the cut scenes are jaw-droppingly good using a cartoon-like style reminiscent of Japanese anime.
Once the game is understood, it can become highly addictive, not to mention frustrating if you lose. Overall the game offers good replay value and can easily be played for two minutes or two hours at a time. However, heed this warning: this game will take over put you in the John McCain clinic for anger management. You have been warned.
