We review Tetris, the ultimate retro classic re-awakened on the App Store with a new look
Published on Oct 12, 2009
Tetris needs no introduction. Having been around for over two decades, it proves the old adage of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." However, like everything, even Tetris needed a bit of a makeover to keep it up-to-date with both the competition and also the platform on which it is run.
Tetris on the iPhone has been given a complete aesthetic overhaul, with some brightly coloured, very nice graphics making for a more modern funky look. Obviously the biggest difference though that it is now in touchscreen format.
The game also offers two versions of the game. Marathon is the old Classic game with a full 15 levels, while Magic mode gives you a target number of lines to clear to complete each level, and has varying different special items such as the Minimizer, which you can use to squish the blocks to fit in to a space.
Tetris definitely hasn't lost any of its appeal over the years, and can still provide enough entertainment to be worth the money. However, the touchscreen is its biggest downfall. Once you get into the faster levels, tapping the blocks to turn them and sliding them into position is virtually impossible. Still an excellent game, even if slightly flawed in this format.
